Pokeys V3 05 SR5 Major service and small bits done

Postby schultzie on Sat, 26 Feb 2011 6:25 +0000

Well i picked up my new Toy On thursday night,

2005 SR5 Dual cab Auto, with an ARB Winch Bar Rock Sliders, Aldi Winch, The car has only been off road a couple times and the bloke i bought it off decided to take his land cruiser up north instead of this hilux... his loss my gain

It needs New Wheels so im planning on putting a set of speedy prado's on in black with in a 17" x 7" rim with some bfg's

First mod was putting a blue tooth head unit in.

What i do need to know though is, how the fuel filler release works at the shroud... well how it is held in place from factory, (car had a tray on it and i put the tub back on)

Also would there be much of a gain by putting a high flow cat and muffler on the exhaust.... not keen on spending 1k on a 3" system...

this car is going to be my work car... and will not be modifyied like my xr8.... that costs too much money

But the lux is very neat and tidy!

XR8 looks good, i thought it was gonna actually be fast or something

As for the lux, it's well worthwhile putting a good exhaust on.
You could chop mufflers out etc etc but the diameter of the system still stays the same.

Pokeys V3 05 SR5

Postby schultzie on Sun, 27 Feb 2011 8:03 +0000

Hasn't been updated in a while it is making 238rwkw on a safe tune, it also came runner up at the all ford day last weekend in it's class,

It is in being finished at the moment, was going to super charge it but we are building a house.

One of my best mates has an ba xr8 making just shy of 500rwkw it is off it's head!

Got Some new Wheels and tires, Ended up with Bfg's as the car is going to be driven on the road 90% of the time.

tires are 265/65/17 LT

I cant believe how much more road manners the car has with the 17's and light truck tires...

exhaust, snorkle and chip are next... also it would appear from what i have read the factory intercooler is inefficient. Is there much in the way of aftermarket upgrades for it?

i have no idea, i went to wide tread in ftg and said i want these wheels and the car is daily driven, and i also said i dont want to f up the gearing with stupidly large tires.

i would of loved a set of MTZ's but decided the bfgs were the way to go...

also did some towing over the weekend and the little D4D doesnt like towing the horse float like my xr8 does.... but AN EXTRA 150kw will do that lol.

Did the back seat mod today, it works a treat, now i have some where to put my Snatch straps and the amps for the stereo upgrade it is going to get.

Sold my old hilux last week so i will be ordering my new exhaust, and snorkle, along with my Tool boxes.

I cant wait to get this thing off road... need to hit up bluff hut i think...

Small update, Finally got my tool boxes a couple weeks ago i have a full length draw below, the tub level and the top box, and the best bit is that i can keep my factory roll bars.

i have also started to make my roof racks which will also accept a std tradesmen rack when completed.

Went for my first trip in the car over easter as well, went to craigs hut (up clear view and down monument over mount stearling) then bindaree falls then 16mile track to bluff hut and out through sheep yard flat. while i got caught up several times from the front and rear i must say that i will never own a manual again. the auto is amazing. It is so easy to drive... but i suppose that is why most people have them..

thinking of putting a long range tank in some time after the 150k service.

Does any one recommend any mechanics in melbourne?

mate u should see how dirty i can get it at work.... :)

Serviced it over the weekend, i noticed it has been blowing a bit of soot so i cleaned the MAF, new air filter (got rid of the k&n i put in it) and a new Fuel filter.

The fuel filter was horribly dirty and the bottom of the bowel had a small amount of water in it and a lot of dirty mess...

The long shot is the car is running much nicer and is more responsive. and i hope to get some fuel economy back

the down side to the story is... i unbolted the inter cooler to inspect the filth in the egr and i fount oil in the cooler... now in the last 7k it has only used minimal oil so i dont think it is that bad... i also know it is somewhat normal for oil to get past the seal... however it does appear from inspection there is minimal carbon build up after the egr.. will get the remote camera down there to be sure though...

i still am looking for some one for the 150k service... i figure toyota is the best way to go but nothing will beat local knowlege.

Pokeys V3 05 SR5 Audio Upgrade

Postby schultzie on Tue, 14 Jun 2011 6:27 +0000

I Have given the Ute a small stereo upgrade since my last post,

This has consisted of, 2x Focal Bus 20 subs under the front seats, Focal 165 splits in the front doors with tweeters mounted in the a pillars, and a pair of focal 165 coaxials in the back doors, and an alpine 4 channel amp to run the front and rear fill.

I have also installed a bigger Distribution block thank i needed and also added extra earths in to the seat belt lug for future requirements (2000w pure sine wave inverter) as can be seen by the power cable that runs out the back of the cab and in to the tray.

I created an independent trigger circuit via a relay in the engine bay which is triggered by the back of the Aux socket

Image

Image

I would also like to note there is also constant 12v power on an Anderson plug in the tray and to further that now near the amp is another relay which charges the Battery in my tool box (for radio, lights and alarm system) which is also on an Anderson plug

I used the sticky thread in the electrical section to patch in to the head unit wiring and left all original plugs in place.

How does it sound... Having tweeters in the a pillar has dramatically improved the sound stage and imaging. Having the 2 8" subs under the seats is interesting, im more use to having 2x12's pounding my chest from a seat depth away.

Back to the story, They work a treat, the little subs sound really clear and put out quite a lot of bass, and bands like the cat empire really shine on these subs.

I Dropped in to thank the boys at freeway car audio where i get my audio gear from on their efforts and got told that they have a great head unit upgrade for the lux that was in their demo board..... this story can end here for tonight but i think i will be calling up for the head unit tomorrow to gain that extra bit of quality and features :)

Started looking in to new breaks today... the price of them is scary... more research to be done i think.

Been a While since i have updated this,
i have since had the 150-160k service done at toyota at this time i had every fluid done on the car, all filters, timing belt, water pump, tensioners, idler pullies, front rotor and pads. The trans service made a huge difference and the fuel system service/ injector clean ( a wurth complete product) is the real money winner... the car was immediatly better on fuel, had more torque, but my 160km old injectors are noisier as a down side.

I have also done the rear muffler chop, and i am getting 60-70km further to a tank now i hate the noise the car makes now... Im looking at getting one of the 3" dump pipes off ebay running that in to a 3" 100cpi cat then in to a 3" hot dog or muffler then reducing to 2.5 " for the rest of the system. short of that i will just throw in a 2.5" 100cpi cat and a hot dog to shut it up a bit.

I Picked up a 2010 head unit with the colour screen and i put it in along with the reverse camera loom and thus i fitted a reverse camera to the car, i also put an override switch on as well so i can turn it on while traveling down the road if need be. Nothing beats backing on to a trailer in one go either :D

Im also looking to get a long range tank made up for the ute, looking at mounting it in front of the diff and between the chassis rails and up to the floor of the tub.

ANNNNND in my first post i said that i wouldnt spend any money on it but i lied.... the xr8 will be getting sold in the next 6 months so the list of mods will entail: Snorkle, lift, lockers... and some more time in the bush :P
