never thought I'd see the day when you would sell the Hilux mate.
Whats the plans for the next vehicle?

Not a bad buy for a capable vehicle.

Price dropped to $35K.

Got me a weapon of a 1.3 Litre Toyota Echo as a daily driver now
(Watchout Rocket Rod, your Yaris will get hunted down....LOL)

Not going any lower in price, so if she doesnt sell for this price, I'll re-acess after April and might even end up keeping her. not gonna flog her off for peanuts.

As I stated on the N70 page when requested, I was going to re-assess the sale of my hilux after the Easter Break.

Well, I just got back from a week at Bright, Victoria with the family.....one of the most scenic locations in my opinion especially during this time of year (Autumn). As seen by the pic below, the hilux was loaded up with everything bar the kitchen sink.

Image

The trip also made me realise/reconfirm how practical these vehicles are as a family car for these types of trips.

Added to that the unbeleivable fact that no one was seriously interested (their loss, my gain), I'm going to start a new phase in the hilux's build-up.

With a bit of leftover RHS steel I still have lying around, I'm going to fabricate a frame for the tray that will allow me to hold more gear safer (long time plan that has never eventuated yet).

Will incoporate a low profile rack ontop with alloy floor/roof for canopy and then get the front/back/sides/canvassed.

Hopefully I can get away with without having to make side mesh doors due to the small size of the tray, im hoping the canvas will be taught enough when fitted.

50x50x2.2 RHS is whats being used
Have some 20x20x1.5 that Ill use as the crossbraces for the rack which will give me 30mm step on the sides of the rack on top.

Question: Should the alloy sheet/plate sit below the cross braces of the rack (cross braces will provide bit of grip when mounted things), or should the alloy sheet go ontop (for a smoothing floor for luggage- checkerplated up)?

Also, how to canvaseers mount the top of the sides of the canvas to canopies when there is a roof already fitted, as not to allow too much water leakage into it?

Im still stumped on how to mount my spare tyre. The rear taillights are too close together to allow it to be mounted on the back. Seriously considering mounting it vertically at front of tray. Theres a crossmember just below/behind the cabin I could drop the tyre into/sit onto and from measurements the 35" tyre would sit even with the bottom of the rear window in that case.

anyway, thats my little update for now.

Bring it on Max, my Mighty 2 is ready for all comers. Skog came out fully of talk that his race bred Starlet would have its way with my Mazda and we all know what happened to Skog in the middle of the night which prevented the line up....

The 2nd hand car market is pretty fickle atm and you need to be a bit lucky to unload them. My neighbour has a 4.5 year old Barina in top condition with 70 something Kay's on it and can't move it for $6,700. At that I thought people would be lining up.
Cheers Rod

The canvas sides and hard top setups that I have seen have usually used either 1/ A rope rail (neatest and most weatherproof) 2/ Zips or studs (not as neat, perhaps quicker to get the canvas right off, not as weatherproof, more fragile, and the other side of the zip still needs to be attached to the hard top) In all cases, it's easy to add a drip rail immediately above the top edge of the canvas. I would go rope rail and add a drip rail/gutter over if it leaked.

I have had a spare in exactly the position you are thinking of, set in as you describe, but on a bigger tray. Visibility is great, and weight distribution is far better than having 37kg plus mounts etc. cantilevered up high and out the back. n. Plus it looks really neat and well thought out.

Occasionally it was an issue when packing other stuff. Acesss if needed when loaded means unloading and reloading just about everything in the tray - but when was the last time you needed your spare ??? Quite a long time I would expect. :)

Cheers Nicebike for the feedback. Any chance of a couple pics of your spare fitted in place?

The roperail, thats the one that slides inside the channel yeah?

Sorry, but that vehicle was sold. Appropriate size slot was cut in the tray floor, and a light sheet metal well made up to suit the tyre radius and width.

That's right for the rope rail - the rope is sewn into the folded edge of the canvas, and then that edge is slid into the channel. Secure as, and very weather resistant.

Might not have been clear, but mine did not rest on the chassis. The well was in the tray and designed to clear everything underneath by just enough to make sure that nothing touched or rubbed when everything flexes and vibrates.

good to see you kept it, tho it is disappointing that nobody (me especially) had the cash to buy this beast

btw, I'd consider a light frame in alloy, or maybe fill in with alloy mesh?? just something to support the canvas

Bad luck with the sale Max, unfortunately it is usually the way when high level mods are made - the target audience becomes very small.

Look forward to seeing the tinkering, umm.. mean work you come up with next. :D

Going to dust off the cobwebbs off the ol girl today out at Cobaw with the boys from TJM Coburg.

Adjusted the front up to 2.75" height from 2.5" and realigned the front end.

4.9 degrees castor LHF & 5.3 degrees castor RHF 8-)

Still a mild nose down rake with toolbox and spare wheel/tyre on tray.

Hope to have some pics up tonight.

Short trip this arvo. Unfortunately for me, my lockers stopped working halfway up the first track, luckily it was after the bits where it was required. Looks like the seals have gone from not using them in 10 months.

Made it look easy on the vid.

Worked out, if you put the [youtube] tags around it and remove the "S" from "httpS", the embed works. Weird little bug.
Cheers,
Jay
