Greasing the drivetrain

Postby lais817 on Fri, 03 Dec 2010 9:03 +0000

G'day guys, just having a look under the new lux and I'm wanting to keep it in top shape. I've done a bit of home servicing, but nothing major, just oil changes and the like, so I'm not 100% on greasing the drivetrain nipples and stuff so I've got a few questions.

1 - The manual recommends using a NLGI No.2 grade grease, either a Lithium based or one with Molybdenum in it: is it worth shelling out the extra cash for a Moly grease or will a good sticky lithium based one do the trick?

2 - Does anybody know what pressure the grease seals will withstand? I've read somewhere that most seals only handle up to about 500psi, anymore and it will damage them, however I've seen that Roothy keeps pumping the grease til it comes out the seals - is this the right way to go?

3 - How much grease for each component? ie spider joints, uni joints slip yokes etc.

Thanks in advance!

Ash

Hey mate, from my experience the only drama you have with too much grease is that it flys out and gets over everything when you drive. I just use a high pressure grease, same one i use on my bucket pins on the tractor, and have just used any automotive grease in the past. I just give all the nippples a pump or two each service, and the slip yokes 4 or 5. That seems to be plenty. Unless you are always on dirt roads then do it every 5000kms or less and if driving though water regulary do it atleast once a week.
Im not stuck..... Im thinking

No dramas mate, thanks for the tips! I'm just "borrowing" the grease we use at work on all our electric motors and stuff, which just happened to meet Toyota's specs for the Hilux - fate I guess :D Where I am there's only 13ks of bitumen either side of town, then dirt after that so every 5000ks it is then. I think I might have done too much research on the matter and confused myself from the sounds of things!

Yeh mate its easy to do. My last lux i was living on a station out west and i would ghive it a couple of pumps every 5000kms or so, as it wasnt a common rail i serviced it then too. If driving through flood water id do it once a week at least.

there would be very few situations where too much grease ever hurt anything mechanical.
and too bad if a bit flys off underneath it certainly wont rust
cheers

If the seal is lip type you do not grease it till it comes out as the pressure may force the lip to turn over, mainly done with air grease gun as it shoves so much grease in it shoves the lip over . On non European trucks with spicer type uni's they only have a o ring type which you grease till it comes out .

I just give them a couple, if you listen you will hear the air stop coming out.

All the drive shafts have grease nipples on them and hence need to be greased reguarly, especaily after going off road. If you have aftermarket rear shackles, they will probably have a grease point on them aswelll

Get under there and have a Look! May as well bring the grease gun as getting under there is half the job. The other half involves pumping grease and cleaning up the mess!

You also need a grease gun with a flexible tip to get in there properly

How have you gone 70,000km without greasing it?
If you are servicing it yourself and didn't know that it needed greasing, maybe you shouldn't be doing the services yourself. Really greasing a vehicle is what we get the work experience boy at work to do :D

If your getting a workshop to service it, how do you know that it hasn't been greased, if you don't know where the grease nipples are?

GREASE POINTS!

Postby toyboata on Tue, 29 May 2012 1:16 +0000

The only grease points are on every UNi joint and slip joint on the prop shafts, so 3 uni joints on rear shaft and 2 UNi joints on front shaft and 1 slip joint on each shaft equals 7 grease nipples in total to lube up. No other points anywhere on the vehicle unless you have after market greasable shackles

Not sure about the newer Hilux's but in older models there is a digram for all grease nipples behind the drivers sun visor. My 03 has it as did my 91 model.
