Clutch cost

Postby fredbear on Thu, 16 Jul 2009 8:25 +0000

My 08/09 SR5 had clutch shudder the day I picked it up new.
@ 1000km service I mentioned it & it was logged into dealers computer for replacement.
They said they would call once parts are in.

They didn't call, & I've been nursing it since.

Just took hilux in for 10K service. & I'm told only pressure plate & bearing are covered by warranty.
I'll have to pay for the driven plate as it is a "wearable part".

I objected on the basis that it was "worn" before it even left the factory.
They are calling later today after they speak to Toyota.
I suspect they will want me to pay for plate.

Anyone else had this response from their toyota dealer? or have I just struck a crappy dealer?
(fwiw I'm in SA) .

Fred
the whole lot even flywheel machining is covered under warranty
i have had 2 replaced under warranty in 40,000km's at Hinterland Toyota Gold Coast
just replaced the 3rd clutch which was Toyota's upgrade unit with a custom built unit , i have had enough of their crap clutches although i am still under original warranty
p.s again all will covered under warranty , you may just have to push the point

Cheers Drew

Hi Drew
Just got a call. My Flywheel has burn marks, so it's being replaced along with the rest of the clutch under warranty, I just need to wait for parts to come over. I suspect it will be "standard" parts, no idea if it will be "upgraded" ones however. My SR5 is one of the first of the update models (dec 08 delivery). So I may have had the pre-updated bits in mine. (wasn't the 09 supposed to have an upgraded clutch? )

Hopefully all will be OK when I collect it.

buno,

Give your details to Drew as it will help all other members who have a manual on warranty claims.

Collectively through this forum, members can show Toyota san how many units suffer from this anomaly.

Hopefully, it will be of benefit.
Cheers

My parents own a 2000 model hilux that had 5 toyota clutches put in due to shudder since new the 6th one was a non toyota clutch ("Excedy" not sure of spelling) and not had any more problems so when I bought my 07/08 model hilux I waited until about 30,000kms, went to toyota, and the story was if there are burn marks on the fly-wheel toyota will not cover it under warranty so not wanting to pay for a new clutch that should be covered I have bought and put in a Excedy heavy duty clutch, so far the vehicle has now done 43,400kms and no worries. Moral of the story dont muck arround with toyota's "shit" clutches but get something that is worth while.

Cheers. Chris.

Just had mine replaced at 90K. 2007 model dual cab.
It started with a thrust bearing squeal. I Drove it into a Dealer that I had never been to before.
The car was purchased 2nd hand and was a country vehicle.
They drove it into the workshop brought it back about 5 minutes later and said we will put a complete clutch kit and
machine the flywheel. I was very pleased with the service I received.
They also found that the waterpump was leaking and replaced it with a new serpentine belt as well

Just had mine replaced as well. The whole unit even the fork was changed out. The flywheel was machined (on the invoice anyway) under warranty as well.

hey guys
am a auto elec, I drive a new 2009 hilux diesel for work, clutch has shuddered since brand new, now has 3000 ks
bought a new 2009 hilux diesel for myself,clutch has shuddered since new,now has 600ks ,(600 not 6000 or 60000)
so it seems normal that you have to take it in for a new clutch under warranty every few thousand ks ?
maybe a big sign on side saying hiluxes have clutch problem, leave on highway,
is there a real solution ?
the work one I drive, rear diff started grinding at 2000 ks,Toyota had to put a diff oil additive in to stop the limited slip clutches grinding ,anyone heard this before ?

I think the Hilux clutch issue is not as wide spread as one believes.

We have had a clutch replaced at 65,000k due to a clicking noise occasionally and not due to shuddering or slippage.

Our Hilux gets used for a lot of heavy off road deep sand towing (4.5 tons) and even that the clutch is on the light side it posses no problems.

Don't think the Hilux is the only 4x4 ute with problems.

The clutch in my 2006 SR started to slip 8 weeks after I picked it up, it was second hand and had only done 50000K. I took it back to the Dealership and they pulled it down to inspect it, they claimed the clutch plate had burned out and gave me the same story that the clutch was not covered by warranty. I talked with the Department of Fair Trading, and they told me to just get all the replacded bits and don't argue with them. I paid for the job, and then filed a complaint form with the Department of Fair Trading, the clutch was perfect not even burned , but the presssure plate had blue marks on it and was clearly the problem component. The Dealership refunded me my money after I turned up there with a Department of Fair Trading Inspector and the replaced clutch components. The morel here is if you have doubts about waranty issues just be nice to the Dealership, and talk with the Department of Fair Trading. I have not been back since, but now the warranty is over.

ninjasuz,

Do you have a problem with the moderating team? I locked your thread on body lift.

You have previously been warned and also given a week's holiday.

It's your call now...........
