Key Replacement??

What were your warranty claims and recall information

Key Replacement??

Postby jiggins on Tue, 23 Sep 2008 12:56 +0000

I remember reading a few months ago about Toyota replacing the old soft rubber key with a hard plastic button one under warranty. I rang toyota today about this and they said its not a warranty/recall think and I could buy it it this right or is it covered by warranty

cheers

Toyota are full of S#%t.

I just had 1 key replaced out of waranty after kicking up a massive stink, only one though... the one which had broken.
Others here have had it done under warranty, some without asking... just part of a standard service.

If your truck is still under warranty demand it.
Maybe try a different service center if possible.

Try to find the previous posting with members who had it done, PM them and get the dealer details etc.

Toyota will tell you a lot of things...

Good Luck

Cheers

Toyota have changed alot under warrantee, not heard any one who has had to pay.

Dont think it was a recall.

I asked and they replaced mine without a problem, except the key in the ignition beeper had to be plugged back in so the programming would work.

From what I understand, it's not a "warranty" exactly. It's a common problem that Toyota are aware of and I believe dealerships will replace any of the soft keys that you say have been playing up. It's something to do with being prone to damage by humid areas (i.e Australia)

Over here in Malaysia, Toyota are real pricks too .......... if they can charge you for the replacement keys, they will do so.

My handbrake's Innova MPV's keys were replaced under warranty and todate my Hilux keys are still ok. I am on good terms with some of the Toyota guys and this helps.
Cheers

Hi All, It’s not a recall issue.
I saw a "TOYOTA TECHNICAL BULLTIN" -Nov07, I think-
Stating that the First Series (May 05 - Sept 06) ‘Luxes had a problem with the rubber on the key (Second Series Sept 06 - Sept 08 with hard plastic key buttons -check my profile / shed http://www.newhilux.net/phpbb/shed.php?view=1&id=510-) and it was to be replaced if the customer request it so.
Jiggins, i suggest if your ‘lux is still under warranty; just ask them to replace it, free of charge of course.

Hi All,

Was reading this with interest as my old style key (June 05) has got to it's end of lifetime.
Checked with my local Toyota - $408.10 for a replacement key - that doesn't include recutting or recoding.

Does anyone know if I have any chance with warranty as I'm about a year out of it, but it is a known fault?

Didn't realise that by weight, toyota keys and gold were worth the same!

Cheers

If your still under your warranty period I believe you can request a replacement. If not, you need to find some of that gold for the exchange...

Hey Dute,
Got those keys, look not too bad, got one of each - Normal 2 button and a flip. Was your chip glued in?
Mine looks like it is epoxied in. Just thought I would check before I get out the hacksaw! :D

I got one as well of ebay and the key cutter has f#$@ked it , they give you this spiel , not my fault if cutter miscuts due to button end not fitting in machine properly, there goes 45 bucks, will stick to original i think

Good advice is never get a key cut in a shopping centre. Always go to a lock smith and try and take the number with you as then he can cut it on a computerised cutter. Sometimes the number is stamped on th elock somewhere. Eg on the inside of a garage door lock. Failing that always cut from an original key.
