More hilux problems

Postby Davo on Wed, 14 Nov 2007 8:08 +0000

As you may have read iv had clutch problems, service problems & warranty on warranty problems well now i have had DIFF problems
35 000 k's and my pinion bearings lost the case hardening and the damage goes

new
1 x pinion shaft
2 x pinion bearings
1 x pinion
1 x crown wheel
2 x inner diff bearings
1 x LH rear wheel bearing
1 x week of driving a 1980 something single cab POS loaner

now i have not pulled the manual but im thinking that is 5 out of 6 bearings in the diff setup

and to top it off when i took it in i went for the test drive with the mechanic (being a former mechanic & past history makes me a skeptic) we decided it was defiantly a bearing probably diff then they called me the next day .... and told me it was tyre noise

oh what a feeling!!

I took my hilux in to ARB to the get the rear diff lock fitted at around 10,000kms and ARB advised me that the pinion bearings were shot and needed replacing, they asked me if i wanted them to put it back together so i could take it back to Toyota or have ARB replace them at my cost, i got ARB to replace them because it would give me the full ARB warranty. Then after another 10,000Kms the diff was howling again so i took it back to ARB and they replaced the bearing again, they weren't sure if it was a faulty diff or a bad install on there behalf, either way my Hilux has done over 35,000kms with no noise. I must say full credit to ARB their warranty is outstanding, they advised me that even if i exceeded their 40000km limit on the diff lock warranty that they would look after me.

More than i can say for Toyota

I've been having similar problems with my rear diff.
Had the crown wheel and pinion replaced twice.
First time LSD pin became loose and shot out damaging the whole LSD cluster and pinion and crown wheel, destroyed most bearings.
Had everything replaced and changed the LSD for ARB locker. No warranty cause running 33s.
2nd time no noise or bearing issues. Was changing to 4.11 ratios and pulled diff apart and severe slop and wearing of crown wheel and pinion. Now have slightly different pinion bearing setup with the different ratio rear diff. Hopefully this sorts out the rear end. Running Redline LSD oil in rear too!

Sounds like my wifes Volkswagen!
Is it wrong to love your truck this much?
