Well, i finally got off my butt and installed a Racor fuel filter today.
I have always wanted to install a additional fuel filter to the Lux but never got around to do it as over here the Delphi 296 is not available and the local Racor distributor who is the Caterpillar agent doesn't carry stock.
So, i procrastinated ................ thought of getting the Delphi from OZ but that would mean I need to stock up on the filters ..........
I spoke to Mark a few days back and he told me he could get one for me and either send it via post or ask my wife to collect as she will be going over in May.
I decided to pop over to the local Racor distributor again today and this time they had stock of the fuel filter assembly.
My first choice was the 445R followed bu the 245R and last choice was the 230R. Only the 230R was available and i quickly grabbed one. Cost was AUD$200.
The 230R has a maximum flow rate to 114 litres per hour with a clean pressure drop of 0.31psi.
It came standard with a 10 micron filter (R20T) and you can opt to replace the filter with either a 2 micron (R20S), 10 micron or 30 micron filter (R20P).
For info, the Delphi HDF296 has a flow rate of 45 LPH and filters to 6 to 9 micron.
The 445R has a better flow rate 170 LPH with a pressure drop of 0.17 psi and has a easier to use primer pump.
The 245R has a flow rate of 170 LPH too with a pressure drop 0.61psi but the primer pump is a little fiddly to use.
The 230R I am using has the small primer pump as the 245R. A little fiddly to use but still manageable.
I installed the 230R as the primary fuel filter with the original Toyota as the secondary/final fuel filter.
I intend to stick with the 10 micron Racor filter and my current plan is to change the Racor filter at 10,000 kms interval and then followed by the original Toyota fuel filter at 20,000 kms interval.
Presently my fuel filter is changed religiously at 10,000kms interval.
Now I have peace of mind as have always been worried about getting a tankful of dirty diesel and have been so anal about filling up diesel that I only go to Shell stations with lots of heavy trucks. And whenever i travel long distances on work I always carry 20 to 30 litres of diesel in jerry cans as stand by just in case I don't feel comfortable with the fuel stations in the other towns.
The bracket was fabricated by a mate and I bought the hose barb and fuel hose and installed it myself.
I had to wrestle with pushing the bloody fuel hose in to the hose barbs and it was absolutely tough to get the fuel hose in as the inner diameter of the fuel hose I bought was smaller than the original hose.
I am absolutely useless at this stuff ....... took me ages
Note to self: current odometer 123,000 kms
