LPG Injection

Postby Seaair on Mon, 18 Aug 2008 9:01 +0000

Has anyone installed or (like me) are interested in installing a LPG/Diesal system?

I have a SR5 D4D (2005) - with 71000kms on the clock.

If this topic has been discussed I aopologise.

All I need to know is whether it is safe, reliable, can you alternate to full LPG etc etc.

I have been thinking about it , but the Dyno numbers I have seen on a couple of the Gas web sites don't look all that impressive for stock D4D motor

Diesel Gas Technologies claim on their web site HP increases of + 12 to 16.7 %

and Torque of + 7 to 18.7%

16 and 18 % sound ok but what does that really mean out on the road

I'm afraid I am a skeptic with a lot of these performance mods

Don't do it.

I've heard enough issues to avoid going down that track.

Someone else said it, gas should only be used for BBQ's.

Thanks Anth and Jackolux for your replies.

Mucking around with modifications that only increase performance slightly only calls for more technical issues that can go wrong whilst on the Gibb R. road.

Know people who run LPG on their diesels and don't have a problem with it, one friend has had it fitted to his Chev powered Patrol for about 8 years.

LPG on diesels are very reliable now and it has been used in heavy vehicles overseas for many years.

One of the 4X4 mags has a good write up about it on Hilux's.

The thing that turns me off is the price.

i got a price a couple of weeks ago was roughly $4500 and then $2000 rebate so $2500, but still have to come up with $4500 up front, also a bit more for larger tank to go with a longranger and exhaust mods to accomadate this.

What size gas tank did they say you would need and where were they going to fit it

the size of the diesel tank determines the gas tank size, the gas tank should be 1/3 the size of the diesel tank apparently,(this is what dieselgas australia told me anyway), they told me they would put the tank under the tub body and this is really the only place for me anyway coz i can't afford to loose any tray space.

$4500, thats a bit rich. What do you get for that, or did the price go up $2000 when the rebate came in. How long will it take to pay itself off?

A guy on the forum has it and believe it to be the best mod on his truck... he has the version 1 of the kits available as now a version 2 is released. I'm looking at going this way myself, both for grunt and the bit extra range.

Looking at the Sequent II from Deisel Gas Aus....

Hey,

I have the DieselGas system (Series I set up, they now have a Series II which is better) and could not be happier with the system.

Very noticeable increase in power and economy, far exceeds the difference my Tunit module adds when compared as two stand alone products.

System has not skipped a beat in almost 3 years, no issues at all. Just loads of extra power and economy!
To be honest I was just after extra grunt when I installed the system, but now with high diesel prices it is a real handy saving everytime I fill up!

I have 33's and standard diff ratio's and drive it mostly around town in traffic and get about 10-11L per 100kms. I carry a bunch of tools and stuff in the back, I reckon about 300-400kgs all the time, so the ecomomy is pretty good. Out on the free way I usually drop to about 9L per 100kms, depending on load.

Give the guys at DieselGas a call, they will sort you out with all the info you need. Brad or Matt are the guys to speak to if your in Sydney.

http://www.dieselgas.com.au

I would not hesitate to put this system on any diesel vehicle I was going to own for longer than 3 years, or do more than 50'000km in. Or if your just after more grunt!
More to the point if your going to put a chip and decent exhaust on your truck, the DieselGas system will be a similar price after the rebate, and will give you better increase in performance on road, and a genuine increase in economy. The system has better results on older diesels, with less eficient injection and turbo's, than the newer common rail motors that are more efficient to start with.

Hope this helps

Cheers
Matt

Maybe yes, maybe no Anth D!

While I had no issues, some toyota service clown did put a "Warranty Voided because of LPG" note on their system for my truck.

As for injector issues, do you refer to the diesel injectors? If so the gas has nothing to do with them, as the LPG is comes in just before the intercooler... so I couldn't really see how they could cause an issue there.

Sometimes if you get bad LPG you will foul the pick up in the tank, or the injector... but if you stick to good LPG you won't have a problem.
(Some LPG has a high % of Butane, which is a dirtier fuel... Porpane is the best, so you want atleast 90-95% Propane)

Also LPG has been used in the US and Europe in the trucking industry for years to help with economy and power for diesel trucks.
Well proven technology, so much so that I think it is VW and or Saab who still warrant their diesels if LPG has been fitted.

Anyways, IMHO it is a great system, well worth looking at.

Cheers

10K, so how do you know who sells butane vs propane, do they advertise it on the pump or was it trial and error ?.

Shane,

I use VitalGas or UniGas as they gaurantee 90% I think.
Another good tip is to go where the taxi's go if you live in a metro area, as that is uaually always good gas!

Basically don't go for some no name servo with no name gas, stick to UniGas and you'll be fine.
