Mark
Good to see some positives coming your way after your ordeal, nice to know good people are able to smooth a rough passage for you.

The damaged pump, is it inside the fuel tank?

Just wondering where to fit a water trap to prevent this happening again.

Hey Brendon there has been a few, Easy day today. Took Dad on a local narly track and basically having a rest day, so sleep in tomorrow.!!!!!

Mark,

I'm happy that everything worked out for you!

You get warranty for the fuel pump and your brother in law came to pick you up. Pretty impressed with the service by this Toyota dealer. Looks like they are a real jewel. Spread the news guys so that he gets more business. They deserve it since they took good care of Mark considering that Mark did not buy the Hilux from them!

Macca,

I don't think the fuel pump is inside the fuel tank. I'm really keen to solve this issue as I'm worried that I get some water contaminated diesel on my out of town travels.

I'm thinking of getting 2 numbers of 20L fuel container to store diesel when I go out of town just as insurance. 40L would be slightly more than half of the fuel tank capacity and that would give me another 350kms range to find a fuel station that I feel comfortable.

Comfortable would be defined as stations with lots of trucks filling up their diesel which would equal to high turnover. It's no guarantee that I'll be getting non-contaminated diesel though!

It's a real pity that the common rail diesel fuel pumps are so sensitive to water in the diesel.

The old engines such as the Bundera's 2L-T or Holden Jackaroo's 4JB-1T never had such problems. You just drained the water out of the fuel filter and primed it and you were on your way!

Cheers.

Out of curiosity, I wonder if the Mitsu Triton are susceptible to the same problems too if they get water contaminated diesel.

I noticed that we have some members from our sister forum www.newtriton.net and it would be great if they could chip in their thoughts.

Talking about buying good fuel, I never buy fuel if a delivery is taking place. No matter how good the servo is. We had a petrol van pick up water years ago, what a PITA.

I guess the next question is if the pump is not in the tank, can it draw fuel through a filter?

Macca, Brendon is right... the pump is not in the tank... it is the pump on the side f the engine... it operates at about 48000kpa... mine was producing only 600kpa.

Guys, I will be doing some research on a secondary (primary) filter setup... even if it means I have to install an electric fuel pump to assist lifting (pushing) the fuel through it... am going to look at the Cav filters... have not seen the taipan one... but will look at that too... maybe even another factory one... with the water sensor on it as an additional warning... lots of ideas... but need to wait til I get home to make any of it happen... will be speaking to some of the big trucking companies about what they use... heaps of prime movers are now running on common rail systems... I believe that Catapillar do as well... if you have any information please send to mgbarnes@bigpond.net.au

I don't know of anyone who has had a prob with fuel as yet in a new ML Triton but I imagine that it will happen :(

A good after market fuel filter is high on my things to do list as I don't think the standard would be any better than the Hi lux one :o :(

just wondering if anyone can think of a way of filtering the fuel when you are filling up rather than filtering it after it is already in the tank. it makes sense. if someone could come up with a devise that you put on the end of the diesel bowser/nozzle that could filter all the water and any excess shit that is in there, you wouldnt have to worry about fuel pumps and extra filters and loss of fuel pressure etc. it may be worth looking into. i wasnt sure if anyone had thought of this so i thought i would put it out there...Glenn
ps feel free to shoot me down in flames if you think its a dumb idea...

TOMUCH...I am in Darwin as well and I have just fitted a secondary filter to my lux... I went with a RACOR 445R it's 2 micron, has a sediment bowl so you can see the snot and it has a primer pump as well... the flow chart from racor shows minimal flow rate drops with contamination and no flow drop with water contamination.

They are about $300 from Fluid power at east arm TDZ. I fitted mine in around 1 hour. fittings and hose ect cost $30.... the replacement spin on filter is around $70 so at that price I am happy to change it every 10000kms.

I have only just joined the site today so when I work out the picture posting side of things I will post some for you to see... It realy is a very easy job.

By the way it is the system that Premier Fuel Injection (local diesel specialists) recomend and fit to all of the hilux's that come through there door...but they charge $750 :o :o :o :o

If you do prefilter the fuel before putting it in your tank what do you do with the snot that comes out of it??? you can't drop it in the bin or on the side of the road....

Maybe you could throw it at the servo owner because he sold you the stuff 8-) 8-)

If you wanted to do a test for water I know you can get water detection kits from SHELL... it is just a small plastic capsule that you draw a bit of fuel through with a siringe...if there is water in it it changes colour... we used them with every load of AVTUR that we filled aircraft with... so they should work with Diesel ok.... they were cheap as chips from memory too.:)

Glenn, unfortunatley, fuel nozzles are sensitive to pressure, and shut off at the slightest increase... (or at least they shut off as son as fuel runs up the filler neck)... making your idea non functional unfortunatley...
2RODS, I get back to Darwin on or about the 15 Jan... might get together and have a look at your system if you dont mind.. could be a good starting oint... may even be the finishing point... CHeers TOMUCH

OK here are some pictures of the filter assy.... I know it is where some of you have the second battery fitted but you can put it somewhere else if you have to.... The mounting bracket is S/S....I had a bit floating around and I must admit that I have a shiny bling fetish 8-)

And one more of the bracket... the bolts through the guard were easy to put in...I didn't have to remove the inner mud guard.... all you need to do is get a panduit strap (cable tie) and put it tight as around the head of the bolt...feed it into the bigger hole in the panel and then get the thread through the pre drilled holes.....;)

Paul,

Very interesting and thank you for your contribution.

That's the spirit of sharing information among us who all own the Hilux.

Mark, the ball is in your hands mate. Let us know what you think when you are back in Darwin sometime mid-January 2008.

Guys,

Here's a link where I found something useful. Glenn, you'll like this!

http://www.parker.com/racor/Prodbul/RcrProdBulltns.html

Look for 7568 fuel filter funnel under fuel filtration.

Simple and used as a prefilter.

I know it can't be used in the fuel stations due to the high volume pump but we could always buy our diesel in jerry cans and then refill the Hilux at home using this pre-filter.

Lot of work but if you are not travelling long distances, you can do it at home. Just fill up 2 numbers of 20L jerry cans whenever the fuel level drops to about half tank. Use the prefilter and you will be able to separate water from diesel.

What do you think?

Paul,

After doing some reading at the Racor website, I've got a few questions for you if you don't mind.

Did you install the water probe with built in detection electronics (RK 30880)?

How long have you been using this Racor?

I noticed that you went for the 2 micron filter (R45S) instead of the 10 micron (R45T) or the 30 micron (R45T). Any particular reason for using 2 micron?

Do you know what is the micron rating for the original Toyota fuel filter?

Looking at the the specifications, the 445R seems ideal for our Hilux as it has the lower fuel flow restriction rating compared to the 245R model.

Tempting..............

;) ;) ;) ;)

Cheers
