When do you change your fuel filter

Postby whitey on Thu, 14 Jul 2011 12:04 +0000

Hi All,

Following on from the thread with instructions on changing the fuel filter, when do people recommend changing it:

Some people say to change every 40,000Km for the 2.5D 2KD-FTV (from the Hilux service interval sheet), some people say every 30,000KM for the 3.0D 1KD-FTV (from the Prado service interval sheet of the same 1KD-FTV engine) other people say only when the filter light comes on & some people seem to recommend changing them every 10,00Km.

Hard to know what the right thing to do is, what do people think.

Cheers,
Eoin.

I do mine every service lad. And it's pretty dirty by then. They're cheap and after 10 000kms mine have had black crud through over half the filter.
If it's worth doing... It's worth overdoing..

You may need to put an additive in your tank if that’s the case to get rid of the diesel algae.

HI, I do mine every 10,000 when It gets a service. If you wait for the light to come on its to late and the cost to replace injectors, pump and rail is expensive. :o

Replacement fuel filter cost me $38 each, Cheap insurance I think.

I drain mine ever 5,000km service I do to it. I replace it every 20,000km.

touch wood no problems, but like others have mentioned its cheap insurance compared to the cost of replacing the common rail and the other parts.

The service book in my hilux does not require fuel filter change. It should last for life of vehicle.

As someone who has spent a lot of money rebuilding the fuel injection system after bad fuel I can tell you that this is just ridiculous from Toyota. Are they still printing this in 2011 model handbooks? Makes me mad as hell to be honest.
What a joke, especially for boys out in the bush with really poor fuel quality.

Replace it every 5'000kms.

Carry a spare in your truck, should you ever get bad fuel the fuel warning light will come on in the dash and you'll be able to replace it on the spot and hopefully stop a motor catastrophe.

As previously noted, cheap insurance form a $5000 - $10000 repair bill.

Just my 2c, but trust me when I tell you to replace it religiously every 5'000km.

Cheers

Can anyone tell me how to reset the fuel warning light on a 2005 Turbo diesel?
The light came on when we were out shooting on the weekend, we replaced the filter but don't know how to reset the light.

Thanks

Look up 'injectors' in the search. You will soon learn to do it every other service.

I have done changing mine last year and will change every 20,000 km. I just look at it as how many litres for each filter. For 5,000 km, a hilux will use about 500-700 litres of fuel. The filter should be capable of filtering many times more of fuel. I think every 5,000 km is probably overkill but do you no harm if you change the filter carefully without letting any contaminants downstream of it. I won't be doing this in the field.

I started to look at other maintenance aspects like changing the coolant. I do not understand the reason for the factory coolant can last for 160,000 km and the subsequent change can last only 80,000 km. I will use the money for buying 3 extra filters during the 20,000 km cycle for changing the coolant so that the pump seal will be properly lubricated.

I've never changed mine. 100k on the clock. So I do it less than every 100,000km.

Mine has 135000km on it. Filter has been changed once 30000km ago, I think And I had to tell them to do it.
I better do it again.

Just changed mine for the first time at 100k. Filter looked good. Dark on outside, clean white on the outlet side. Probably premature.
