Currently thinking about upgrading to a newer D4D hilux from the trusty 2.8D. I have been doing alot of reading on here about these injector problems and that there are now new dimond tiped versions (DLC) available as a replacement, so I assume that all new models will have this type.
Does anybody know what model / year hilux these new injectors were added by Toyota as standard?

Pretty sure it was 08 onwards, someone correct me if I'm wrong :)

So what is the consensus with the new DLC injectors are they a reliable fix for this problem? Has anyone with a later model lux, 08 on, had any prbloms with the injectors?

yes the new injectors fix the problem.

These were standard on prado's....there are almost no complaints that I know off from prado owners in comparison to hilux owners.

I was just talking to my boss who has a '07 Prado and he had his injectors replaced after 3.5 years under warranty. So If these were DLC versions, they are not a fix.

I was really hoping the earlier Prado's had the old style injectors also.

G'day Guys , I have read a fair bit of this thread , I just thought I would tell you my story , after returning home from Cape York the motor developed a hell of a clatter , yeah ok Injectors , just over 100K on the odo
I didn't bother with Toyota ( stuff em )
Had 4 injectors replaced by the local diesel shop , new injectors ,fitted $2558 ,
mine went off to become change overs .
that was August last year

155k on the clock now and she's clattering again , bugger ,

Im told its just the shitty Diesel we get here in Oz and there is stuff all we can do about it

I didn't know anything about a improved injector until I read this thread , do they actually exist or is it just wishful thinking

Oh my Lux is a 06 - d4d

I have a 07 D4D, just bought it a 2 weeks ago, runs fine everthing is in good order bar the cold start rattles which i was unaware of, fuel economy is about 650-680 a tank, the tappety noise lasts about 3-4km even after warming up for 5mins in the morning, i have a mountain to climb as i go to town and under load is when its at its worst. The previous owner told me he has had the re-flash done and injectors read about 20k ago, it now has 140k on it, All i can think of doing is gettin it read again and if in need of new injectors well try and winge my way into some sort of compensation with the bill, not fussed if i have to fork out something but this problem is just about everywhere my boss's 07 sr5 does it, its only got 60k, I also notice a slight surge in power while driving when the rattle is going on ? whats the cheapest people have heard the 4 injectors replaced for??

g'day everyone
i myself have just spent the last 2 months jumping up and down at the dealership that the rattles and pinging when cold aren't acceptable after having the computer scanned and flashed 3 times and they have finally come to the party and are in the process of replacing the injector set! just hoping now there is no long term damage to be concerned about

Mines 08 and had the injectors replaced, from meory mine is a march build not sure.
My rattle is back after being on new injectors for 5,000kms which is a bit of a worry.

A mate that works for toyota told me the DLC is a load of crap and they are failing too, but not as common

Ok Fellas, so I finally went in to Toyota Service today to talk bout the Injector issues. Actually got a really helpful fella who knows all about the Injector issues and so forth...basically told me that we need to go through the process of problem solving first before we (the dude at Toyota actually) can submit a claim for the new ones. :) The truck hasnt had any recalls done yet so he has booked me in for next week some time, oh and he said with a winky face, he will get them to cover the re-flash cost at the same time! Looking good so far! :D Anyways Ill keep anyone interested updated on this post when things happen.
One quick thing he told me was that the 're-flash' is actually just an ECU setting that dumps more fuel in for a period of 1000-1500kms in the hope to clean the nozzles out. Once that is done I have to then leave the truck overnight with them for the parameter check. +/- 3 or more somethings either way from the factory standard settings and the injectors are no good according to Toyota. May help others..?
Stay tuned....

I think the new DLC injectors must have been installed from Oct 08 (MY09) build date on.

What injectors did you replace yours with? Toyota, Ebay or others?

I don't think any magic coating can protect injectors from a lump of water in the fuel (not saying that is what happend to yours), but IMHO this DLC will make the injectors alot more resilant than the originals, and have a similar life expectancy to any other common rail engine injector on the market.

So correct me if i'm wrong but the way i see it the problem is the carbon build up on the old style injectors. which is the problem i have at the moment. i was quoted $700.00 per injector for a new set from darwin. I have found them on ebay form John at one shop auto in Sydney (any dealt with them?) for 375 per injector.
Back to my point. If id spent 2 g on petrol injection kit I would have avoided this problem. if you believe their blurb..

Has anyone found any cheaper injectors?
Cheers JA

btw my hilux has 140k on it, its a late 06 model with a recent 2.75inch beaudesert exhaust.
