Extended rear shackels?

Extended rear shackels?

Postby 9W6VX on Mon, 30 Jul 2007 12:55 +0000

After creating the snorkel topic which the jury is still out as to whether it increases fuel consumption and increase engine performance, I'm creating another topic to pick your collective brains.

Is it possible to raise the rear suspension without changing the leaf springs by using extended shackles or using lift blocks?

Me being the cheap bastard, I plan to get the ARB bullbar model which allows the original fog lights to be retained. I will also change the front coil springs to raised Kings Springs (KTFR-101HD)to compensate for the additional weight and will also change the shocks to Koni or Bilstein.

The ride of the original APM leaf springs are acceptable to me especially when it is loaded with cargo.

Assuming that the front Kings Springs gives a lift of 45mm nett after installation of the ARB bulbar, the rear shackels need to be longer from original by 90mm.
That seems far too long!

Or use 45mm lift blocks to raise the rear?

Thanks again mates.

Snake Racing at Peakhurst make these, I think they are $230 a pair from memory, they also do a front strut spacer to give you additional height without changing the original suspension components.

You can view them and mail order on their website
On the internet you can be anything you want. It is strange that so many people choose to be stupid!

If you're going to do it on the cheap, Kings have a package in which they add an extra leaf to the rear packs, gives you the extra lift and also a much better load carrying capacity, the factory springs are very so-so and after 12 months of normal load carrying you will find them very flat and doing not very much in the rear.

I would try to avoid adding an additional leaf to the rears as it would stiffen the ride.

As you said kazdan69, the rear ride is average but it's acceptable to me. Furthermore, as I'm on a budget and trying not to blow a big hole in my bank account!.

The fastest would be to use lift blocks to raise the rear and just use greasable standard length shackle.
