Rubber or Urethane

Rubber or Urethane

Postby StoneySR05 on Sat, 14 Jul 2007 4:54 +0000

G'Day All,

I would like opinions on what type of bushes to use in your leaf springs, Rubber or Urethane (OME yellow bushes).

I have heard some people say to stick with the genuine rubber bushes as they make the rear suspension flex better, but why do all aftermarket companies use urethane?

I picked up the greaseable shackle today, as the supplier did not have them instock when I purchased my kit, I plan on installing them on Saturday.

Before anyone says it I would lubricate the rubber bushes with silicon grease if I changed back to rubber (silicon will not effect the rubber and I can get it from work).

Thanks
Carl

Rubber or Urethane

Urethane will certainly last longer in off road use.. Rubber by its very nature will flex more and give a better ride around town... its softer...but will degenerate if subjected to extreme conditions off road... Point to note...if you put Urethane bushes on your truck and do not lubricate them with some regularity... they will degenrate pretty quickly... heat build up through lack of lubrication will destroy them pretty quick, where as rubber tends to withstand this a little better...So..Both have good points and bad.. if you intend on maintaning your vehicle with regular greasing, (designed for Urethane) then definately go that way... if you don't intend on doing much offroad work...and don't fancy geting under your car very often with the grease gun, I would stick with the rubber... Hope this helped...Cheers TOMUCH..

Thanks Guys, I installed my greaseable shackles today and left the Urethane bushes in.

You know what is dumb, the nipple for the top pin is straight, now way are you going to get a grease gun unles your gun has a flexible nozzle.

I replaced the top nipple with new nipple that has a 90 degree bend so I can use my grease gun.

I have OME as they were part of the package when I purchased the kit. If you were looking at buying a set check out the Ironman shackles I think thy were around $30 each.
