suspension kits/prices and tyre sizes

Postby Hilux Max on Wed, 04 Jul 2007 7:29 +0000

G'day all,
Will be purchasing a new SR 4x4 D4D, and want a suspension kit fitted from new and was wondering if the helpful members here could please quote me their setups, what it cost them if they dont mind, and what tyre sizes they are running.
ATM Im leaning towards the Ironman kit of 2" and waiting for a reply from High Country Customs on their 3"lift kit.
If I got 2" I will be running 255/85x16 Maxxis Bighorns on the stock SR wheels but if I go 3" I'll get the same tyres on 16x7 sunraysias and 285's.

any advice fellas? Im in Melbourne if that helps.
Thanks in advance 8-)

Hey mate paid bout $2200 fitted for a 3inch lift with bilstein shocks all round n king springs on the front from climax at newcastle nsw, few guys have the same setup on here. I went soft springs in the front coz i dont have bar or winch. Runnin 33's on standard rims just get slight rubbing occasionaly on front left mud flap. i didnt know u could get sunraysias with the right off-set 2 fit the new hilux???

Have a look through all the previousn posts on suspension.
If you go 255 tyres you'll need guards, cost me $250 plus frieght. If you go 285 7" rims will be to narrow, have you checked with Maxxis on wheel sizes to suit the tyres? Wheel offset is critical when you go the bigger tyres don't get 30 + which is standard, the tyres need to move out further. I bought 30+ and found the rims to be close to standard but when you add the extra size of the tyre, ie 285/75 x16 it will hit the upper control arm or what ever you call it. This does not stop me doing some hard 4wding though, soon to fix this up.

Thanks for the info guys. I wont be putting guards/flares straight away, I'll learn to llive without it, I think the 255 option should be ok as I dont want the guards rybbing issues and have had enough of modifying guards to suit with previous hilux's.

doug, have you modified you guards for the 285's yet? because if you space the wheel out further away from the upper control arm, you would be putting it closer to the rear of the front guard/mudflap area when turning the wheel.

ripin5, yeah you can get sunraysias to fit the new hilux's thou only in 16x7 as far as I know. Why nobody makes a 15x7 beats the hell out of me....theres a market for it thats for sure.

You running 33's with the sr5 rims, I'm guessing you got the 33/10.5x15 tyres, correct? not a bad setup. didnt think thou that 3" would cost so much.

is your kit with drop brackets or are the CV's angled down further than 2" lift? what Im getting at is does your 3" kit wear the CV's out quicker?

thanks guys

ah sweet so where bouts r they available from? wat off-set r they?
Nah im running 12.5's i know ya shouldn't but 10.5's just to skinny. Pretty sure CV's just angled a bit more so they prob will wear a little quicker but i really wanted that extra inch! yeh pretty pricey i think ya can get it $1850 parts or round that, i just really wanted the lift n few guys got this lift done on here so i thought i'd give it a go seems all good so far

I have not modifed other than removing the standard mudflaps that help, my sliders are bolted to the chassis in this area and my custom mudflaps are bolted behind them.

G'Day Mmaaxx,

I just done a lift and this is what I found
2" Ironman $1100
2" Dobinsons $1300
3" from Climax - Bilstein Shocks Ironman Springs $1600
Through many nights of decision making I fitted 2" Old Man Emu lift, I got it through a mate for $1300. I must say that the car is a nice ride with the OME suspension

I to have an SR and I plan on fitting 235/85/16's (32's) I thought that the 255/85/16's would be to wide to fit to a 6" wide rim.

Thanks Stoney, keep us updated with pics when the tyres come in eh?

The 235's you speak of on the maxxis website state a 6.5"rim whilst the 255's state a 7" rim.

I still think you'd get away with fitting a 255 on a 6" rim.

Look how many people are fitting 32/11.5x15's onto the stock SR5 15x7" rims.

Just got an email from High Country Custom regarding their suspension kit and here is what they say -

"yes he is running 285/75/16 with DC black 16x8.
The offset on these rims is a must for tyre clearance on the upper arm
The tyres do require some guard trimming and I would recommend normally
fitting a 32"

price on tour pack is $1850
race pack is $3340

both these kit are height adjustable from stock height to 2.5-3" "

Thought I'd let you all know, unfortunately as tough as this kit is, its outta my budget.

:(

just checked out the cooper site and you can get the ST's in 255/85x16 and they state a 6.5" to an 8" rim for them, so I dont see how half an inch with a 6" wide SR rim would pose a problem

Mate, I have 2 inch OME with 10mm packer in the front. Running the DC1's with a Micky Thomp 32inch MTZ. Look great goes great and had alittle rubbing however remove the front mud flaps, put custom ones on and do very little guard trimming and it is great. Very happy.

Cost=
OME 2 inch $1800 roughly

There is a guy at ARB in MElb with the same set up. You can talk to him if you wish.

Mmaxx,

I totaly agree with you about the rim width I can't see about how 1/2" would make a difference but some of the tyre dealers don't want to fit anything that is not within the spec. I will be happy to stick with the 235's.

hi all,I have just done the climax suspension with bilstien/lovells and got a true 3" lift , however confusion still occurs on what tyre choice i should go for,i would prefer not to flare the truck , so can any one tell me if i can put a 235/85/16 tyre on my standard sr 6" rim with out any rubbing , i know your ment to fit them to a 6.5" but that aside will they rub regards benny :-)

benny, you should have heaps of room for them if you gota a 3" lift. some of the guys are running 285's (33's) with the 3" lift so skinny 31.8" tyres would be fine. you might wanna try the 255/85x16

Benny,

235's are fine on the 6" wide rim. Cooper's Website says 235/85R16 fit 5.50"-7.00". I am planning to fit this size soon and apparently they won't rub (I Hope)
