2" or 3" Suspension lift

Postby StoneySR05 on Tue, 12 Jun 2007 7:11 +0000

G'Day All,

I have been getting quotes for the suspension lift and I would like opinions on the whether I should get the 2" or the 3" lift kit.

Quotes so far,
1. 3" Bilstien's and Ironman springs from Climax at Newcastle $1600
2. 2" Ironman lift $1100
3. 2" Dobinsons lift $1300

I need to keep the budget as low as I can as I need to claim the cost back through my lease.

Are there any problems with the 3" lift,
* Can you get a correct wheel alignment
* Is the CV angle OK
* Will CV boots wear out allot quicker with the 3" lift v's the 2" lift
* Does the 2" lift give enough clearance

I know that there are a few regulars on the forum with the 3" lift so it would be great to find out what you think

Good question Stoney!

I'll be watching for answers keenly. And with the 3" kit does it mean you can fit 33" tyres rather than 32" tyres with the 2" lift?

G'Day Mick,

I don't know about 33's but if you look at Rippin5L's profile he has the same lift kit from Climax that I am talking about and he is running 33's

StoneySR05, IMHO, I think that 2 inches is enough lift...and 32s are about as big as you would want to go...Yes the higher you go with out correcting the CV angle the faster they will wear out...and not just the boots... the whole CV...as for the wheel alignment... I am not sure about that... so I won't comment on that part any further...

Basically it all depends on what you want to do with your truck... Touring verus Extreme off road...lift is not everything...check out the latest DVD from 4WD Monthly.. the Tassy trip... they have a Prado with 2 inch lift and not much else... it went a long bloody way before they crunched it into a stump....a really big stump.... Have you considered going for Bluemax? They are really good.... www.bluemax.com.au give em a buzz... find out who their local supplier is... for $1100 or so fitted, it's pretty good gear. That's what I have and have been very well looked after by them.

Dave,

I did call Bluemax a while ago but it has slipped my mind this time, I will give them a call today.

Who ever I get the suspension from needs to give me a dodgy receipt so I can claim it back through my lease maintenance account.

I want to install the kit my self as I am on off work for another 6 weeks as I am having Chemotherapy for Testicular Cancer. I was thinking about getting a some sort of model to do so I thought that I can treat the car as a week long project and just spend a couple of hours here and there when I am feeling OK.

Thank Duges,

It sound like good therapy, I am also planning doing a snorkel maybe a rear bar and a set of 32"s.

I just got a price for a full ARB lift kit through a mate for $1300, I think I will get the ARB kit as it seams that you get some sort of support with problem through ARB.

To finally put my suspension lift decision to bed, I have ordered the 2" Old Man Emu lift kit hopefully pick it up today (Thursday).

I am surprised that I did not get a bigger response from the guys with the 3" suspension lift as it would of been great to get there opinions.

In the end I don't think that I have made a bad choice

Thanks
Carl

I thought the front only had light and heavy, at least thats what I was told :-)
When I looked into it further it turns out even they are the same rate springs only the heavy is longer, so I went the hd.
Went the medium rear also, but as you say I hope I got it right and will find out at the end of the month.

Cheers

The part number for the front spring is OME883, I don't have the number for the back springs.

Yep thats the light one. I may have worded last post badly there is light/heavy front and light/medium/heavy rears and the heavy is a constant 400kg rated.

Hopefully I can give a report next week on how it all goes

Hey stoney 2 or 3inchs really isn't much diff i just wanted the clearance 4 mine as i dont mind testing it 2 it's limits n i had a earlier model with a 6inch overall lift with 35s so i was just use 2 that. honestly i think anything is better than standard especially the front end. I hope u enjoy fitting it in ur time off!!

I've got the goods in the garage and I have got the whole day Friday put aside, so hopefully it will be done by the end of the day and a wheel alignment done on Saturday.

What’s next 32's, ARB rear bar or snorkel? I've still got another six weeks off work and I need something to keep me entertained

StoneySR05,
If you decide to fit a snorkel, go the AIRTEC, no intrusion on visability. Check out the "gauges" topic.
Cheers
