Busted CV boot?

Busted CV boot?

Postby ronnny on Fri, 14 Mar 2014 12:09 +0000

Hi all,

Below is a pic of my drivers side inner wheel and rotor etc.

I have what looks like a split cv boot.

My technical knowledge only goes as far as fluid changes and little things like discs and rotor changes etc.

Any help on refitting it or if its NOT the problem?

I had this happen recently. I went to Toyota and purchased their CV boot kit for $200. It includes both the inner, outer, grease and new bands. Most people will agree that the genuine boots are the best. You can buy cheap Chinese boots for about $10 but they don't last if you have a lift as it looks like you do in your pic.

Unless you have all the correct gear to remove the CV shaft your best to pay someone to do it. Should only be 2 hours labour if they know what they are doing.

There is a thread on here somewhere that talks about the tools required and instructions to remove the CV shaft. Have a search for it.

Good luck :-)

Ive had to replace the outer boot on each side since had mine. If your in Perth theres a company called Outer control CVs and think they based in O'CONNER. Cost me 170 each from memory plus another 60 for them to come out to your workplace and do it.

They use great boots. Real thick and havent had to chenge them since

Hey mate, I feel your pain. If you need it Donne ASAP but don't have the coin, go to Pedders and get it on credit. They have a thing called EZ pay, which is credit with zero interest. Pay back $30 bucks a week, you won't even notice it.

Also , spend the xtra cash and get toyota OEM boots, don't let them tell you otherwise. This can also be put on credit via EZ Pay. Hope it works out mate.

Theres going to be another option shortly which will be the ducks guts in cv boots.

I cannot remember the actual material spec at the moment but it will be a mixture of materials that are much stronger yet flexible and the overall outer diameter of the outer boot will be smaller for more clearance on full droop against the lower arms on some of the bigger lifted applications.

Will update in future as time gets closer.

Know exactly how you feel, noticed the boot was torn and grease everywhere on Monday, happened somewhere in last 400km. Cv seemed fine, no clicking or nothing, but didn't wanna risk it. I swapped in a CV from bursons, cheaper than the boot kit. After removing the old one, amazing how much dirt was inside the boot, even though I haven't left the road might be something to consider. I'm going to see if I can refit boots to make a spare when I get home

Wasn't too hard, loosely followed a guide on the surf forum site, ill see if I can get a link...

well i went and saw the guys at pedders, he was a bit of a douche and was strongly suggesting pedders brand even after telling him i wanted genuine. he then went on to say the cv shaft should also be replaced, but when i asked if they could tell if it had already been replaced previously, he couldnt give me an answer. then slipped down to my mechanic and he said it will be fine for the next few weeks aslong as i stay out of 4wd.

Yeah I was considering that but since I'm away from home at the moment, I didn't really wanna risk Melbourne to Sydney trip on sunday with a busted boot. As I said, glad I didn't. When I have time, I'll get the cv inspected and see if I can make a spare out of it.

Heres the guide I mentioned earlier in case you want it. I found while doing it it is easier to jack the whole car up and then adjust just the wheel you need with a second jack, and also had to undo the swaybar, and lever it out the way when removing/replacing CV. Good luck

A quick fix that lasts, top up the split boot with Cro-Moly grease.

Wipe clean the outside of the boot with petrol, slightly turn wheel to open up the split and fill groove with Sixaflex.

Let dry for 24 hours.

I have had this repair for 12 months.

Found a split in the passengers side boot this arvo, leaving for a trip tomorrow.
Tried this today, tomorrow will tell if it holds.

Self amalgamating tape is also an easy semi permanent repair. If fixed radiator hoses with it before, excellent stuff for oh shit sitiations. Much like zipties and rape tape
