Airbag Rear Helper springs - who's got em?

Postby Hilux Max on Tue, 05 Feb 2008 5:11 +0000

G'day all,

Have been wondering for a while about these airbag helper springs for the rear when loaded up to go on camping trips with the family and likewise other heavy loaded situations, and was wondering if any of you here have them fitted to your hilux's, if you could post up some pics of what they look like, if you fitted them yourself or who did them for you and of course, how much did they cost in the end?

Thankyou in advance 8-)

I Use Airbagman rubber air bags fitted to my OME medium springs. I can carry my Trayon loaded weight of around 600kg with no problems. In fact Lux handles like a sports car on flat dirt roads and black stuff. Highly recommend airbags.

Cheers

I have the boss air bag helpers and they are guaranteed for over 200psi- which we will never get to (nor will the compressors) I have a picture on my profile
cost close to 400 from memory

I got mine from E Bay probagman for $392.00 + $22.00 freight, I think the air bag man supplied the solonoids for in cab control, also double needle guage for $175.00 delivered.
Had to buy some fittings and pipe to suit my install and am very happy with the outcome. I set the rear at 810mm bottom of rim to under flare. Adjusted lights and alignment to suit and result is great.

Off road I let the pressure down and didnt notice any articulation probs, I lost 45mm upward travel.

Troyco, where did you get the Boss airbag kit from if I can ask?

Macca, so with the airbags fitted you loose uptravel ?! :-)

Is that with the pressure right down and empty? I understand if you have some pressure in there to help hold weight, but that shouldnt happen when empty should it?

did you guys fit them yourselves, and were they difficult, I imagine it'd be just a bolt up setup yeah? and then maybe run an airline to somewhere more accessible right?

thanks for your replies guys. 8-)

Oh guys, one more question please, do you guys have raised suspension in your hilux's and can you purchase the helper airbags to suit your suspension lift?

mmaax, I lost 45mm upward travel, they were 110mm compressed and the bump stop is 65mm (which is removed.) Install took 30 minutes.
A big lift may mean packers Im not sure.

I fitted them pretty easily - just follow the instructions - read them before you start!!!!

I was going to by a pair from a mate who wanted to take them out of his lux as he wasnt happy with them. We had the same 2" OME like me lift he didnt like them because he lost wheel travel of 45 mm upward on the rear. Decided against them because of reduction in rear end articulation. They put packers to help with the lift. Without checking I think you maybe able to get a double bag setup for lifted vehicles and I saw one also with a helper spring. Not sure of your setup but could you put in an extra leaf?

Great thread... I am just debating the same thing.... airbags or susspension upgrade...$410 vrs $1700

The poly airbags seem OK... I only need them for towing the boat 8-)

Suspension upgrade is the way to go. But haveing said that my Medium ome springs in the rear need a little help. The ride height is ok but with a little weight the rear is a bit soft. I have bokked back in to have a extra leaf installed in the pack rather than the constant 400 KG springs. OME tell me the 400 KG springs are harder than the Mediums + one leaf. Can anyone help me here does that sound correct

The nice thing about these is you can adjust to suit any load.
Springs are set, when loaded and the spring is compressed thats it.
Put some air in the helpers and your back to where you were.
Plus the headlights are pointing in the right direction, and the front alignment angles are correct.

I've got the polyair bags and they suit my purposes, but you might want to consider a product I saw at TJM a while ago as it doesn't reduce articulation. It's a single leaf spring which bolts onto the existing leaf spring setup. There's no need to touch the existing setup and no articulation is lost. Can't remember the exact name but from memory it was a bright blue or maybe yellow colour. Give them a call as I don't think they were nearly as expensive as the airbags.

I just ordered the poly airbags as The hug and kisses pulled up at the idea of $1700 for the OME set up.... oh well they will do the job for now and I might be able to get a snorkel in the next few months as well 8-)

Now I just need for them to get here and get fitted.....hurry up air freight !

Hi All
I have the Boss bags in mine with standard springs, to compensate for most of the loss of upward travel I removed the 2 bottom two leaves much better ride it raises the diff and lowers the car as it sits below the springs and just add a little air to get the right ride height with very little or no upward travel loss I haven't had any problems with diff movement or wheel tramp have done the simpson desert with a heap of weight no problems I think they are great for flexibility but thats only what suits Me the only thing I did notice is I will be getting better shocks to control the rebound as it can be slightly bouncy but better shocks would take care of that some research needed as i don't want to have harder shocks just more control on the spring back rate

Just picked up the lux after the polyair bags were fitted.... they look a bit odd in there but the ride is higher and feels better...

The draw system, fridge second battery and tools weigh more than you think;)

I have riderite rear helper bags and they work a treat. I still have original suspension with a steel tray and canvas canopy. With a load and the reduced up travel the bags tend to bottom out a lot unless you put more air in and lift the rear slightly. Then the whole thing tend to get a bit bouncy. I fitted skyjacker rear shocks and that fixed the whole problem. With all the camping gear and Crf450x mounted on the back I run about 60psi and it doesnt bottom out on the rough stuff.
