32's with standard suspension

Need something to get you rolling?

Postby StoneySR05 on Sun, 22 Oct 2006 5:43 +0000

G'Day All

My neighbour has three 235/85/16 (32") Cooper ST tyres I can have and I would like to know if there would be any rubbing issues.

I have a dual cab with standard suspension and standard bumper bar.

I know that 32's fit with no rubbing with a suspension lift.

Thanks

I tried the same tyre size but the Cooper STT it hit on full lock, fitted 215/85/16 Cooper ST
don't know if you can limit your steering lock to stop this, I was attempting to get the largest Dia I could.

Doug,

Where did it hit, on the bumper or the chassis?

On the weekend I messed about with a couple of old BFG muddies 235/85's. I put one on the front and it appeared that everything would be OK but these tyres are just about worn out, maybe new ones might be different.

I currently have the same muddies on the back of the car to see how the car performs, the biggest draw back is that the speedo is out by 10%. The muddies lifted the back of the car by 35mm.

I'm keen to run the bigger tyres as they actual look like the size that should be on the car.

I've got 285/75/16 BFG AT’s (I have a little lift) on standard offset wheels, the only thing I had to do was take the front mud flaps of and cut a small piece from the front bumper. So I cant see why you cant fit the 235/85/16, it will just come to suspension up travel weather they will hit or not.

Stoney you can try an fit one of my wheels if you like to see how they fit.

OH and

the speedo problem is easy to over come with a Marks speedo correction module, there about $175 plus postage.

Dan,

How much did you trim from the front Bumper?

Was the speed correction module hard to fit?

I am planning to run the old muddies - 235's on the back of the car for a week or so. I would like to catch up so I can have a look at the work you have done on your car.

Thanks

That bugger all no one would ever notice. I would say that you would need to trim even less with the 235's as they a skinner and smaller diameter.

I have been driving around for a couple of days now and I am still happy with the cars performance with the larger tyres on, I am taking my boat out tomorrow so it will be interesting to see what it tows like.

I will send you an email about a time to catch up.

I run BFG 255/85/16s these will fit but rub on the inside wheel arch at full righthand lock. i don't have a bumber i've got a bar. We tried them on a standard sr and they fit with the same rubbing. We didn't take the sr off road so i don't know if the tyers would foul with a lot of movement.

The 255's are 34mm (1.33") larger diameter than the 235's, so would you say that the 235's would clear the inside wheel arch.

I'm starting to feel that 235's should be OK.

I tried Cooper STT 235x85x16 808mm dia, which hit on the inside at full lock. I bought ST 215X85X16 774mm dia looking for height a wider tyre would be beater. ST 255x85x16 is 844mm dia, Danlux BFG's are 852mm dia. Danlux has 8" wide wheels, my SR has 6", the 235x85x16 is as big as you can go on the standard steel rims.

Doug,

Did the tyre hit when the suspension was compressed or when it was at the normal ride height?

I tried one of the 235's on the front and it cleared the inside (chassis rail) when at full lock but I did not try to fully compress the suspension. The rims the tryes are on are Nissan rims and hit the bracket caliper when the wheel nuts are done up so I could not drive it.

Like Vinne Barbarino said - I AM SO CONFUSED

The tires that come with the new hilux are so small and there is not much room for bigger ones. I am trying to find the biggest size that will fit, so what do you guys think is the highest and widest tire you can fit?

31 x 10.5 x 15 should fit just fine.

Anything larger would be a tight fit.

Personally, I'm going for 30x9.5x15 once my original Bridgestone 255/70R15 wears out.

I feel that the auto Hilux gearing is too high and large diameter tyres will rob performance.

But you guys have the 1KD 3.0 litre engines which are more powerful.
Cheers

The 235x85x16 Cooper STT tyres hit on the inside at normal height. Go to a tyre outlet that has the tyre you want and ask them to fit a tyre to see if will fit before you commit to a purchase, good luck.

Doug,

What you suggest sound like a good idea, All I have to do is take my spare and have the tyre swap around.
