What tyre size on 17x9 rim

Need something to get you rolling?

What tyre size on 17x9 rim

Postby rosshire on Fri, 23 Sep 2011 10:19 +0000

Just picked up my ute yesterday after fitting my 2 inch tiff dog lift kit.
I went in to get tyres for the ute. I had planne to put 33 10.5 15 on standard sr5 rims.

I thought I'd ask the guy about nicer rims as I wanted something that looked a little bit tougher.

They guy showed me 17x9 rim which I fell in love with immediately.

They offered to put a 33 12.5 tyre on one side to show me what it looked at.

The tyre hit the control arm HARD.

He then put a smaller tyre, I can't remember the size, but was a narrow 265 tyre size.

He mentioned spacers were an option but mentioned it wasn't good on a 4wd.

The tyre only comes in that size and I can't get it out of my head.

I am looking for feedback on what the best way to make it fit?

What problems I may have?

What is the biggest tyre size I could get on?

Any other general feedback on fitting this rim
Size.

Thanks guys

Mickey T have a 32/10.5/17 and a 33/11.5/17 but anything in 33's
that is wider than 10.5 will need trimming (unless you get a 4inch plus lift ) . If you want to run the 33's with out
any trimming go the 33/10.5/15 and don't like the SR5 rims find some 15 inch rims you like
with the closest offset to the SR5 rims ( try them on first making sure that they don't rub on the brakes).
If your willing too trim maybe look into 16 inch rims seems to be more tyre options for 16 inch.
Personally i really rate the 33/10.5/15 size allows for good bagging with low pressure , sure the rims
don't look as good as others but it works.

What is the offset of the wheel? if you dont know that then you wont know which way to go and neither will any of us in assisting you.

Obviously the offset was too positive if it was hitting the UCA.

dont use spacers. 33/12.5x17 with a 2" lift will hit pretty much everything when turning and taking any bumps.....you will be cutting/trimming to make it work.

get over it and get another wheel. not worth the headaches. Looks arent always everything.

just my 2 cents.

atleast the 33/10.5x15's on sr5 wheels would have worked.

17x9 is a pretty wide rim which will increase the risk of damaging them on rocks etc. especially if you get a norrowish tyre

Sorry forgot to mention the offset is +30
I'm not trying to get 33 12.5

I am happy with a 265 70 17 or a narrow 33.
I am just a little worried about the rim width.

with a 265 most fellas on here are running at 7" wide rim and the sr5 rim is 7" wide. there are plenty of different designs when it comes to with a 15x7" or 16x7" rim and many variations of offset.

Yes true but a 16 x 8 looks better a 17 x 9 looks awesome but it all comes down to practicality. If you tend on doing a lot off roading they are going to get damaged so the more pronounced the edge of the rim is they more banged up its going to get. The height of a 33 is going to give you a little more diff clearance. If you do more mall crawling go 17 x 9.
Send Helmut a PM ,or he'll comment on this post pretty soon hes studied more tyres than Ive had hot dinners
Also have a look at twisty's build.... but dont say you weren't warned :o :o

i have 17x8 on mine with 275/65r17 yokohama go12 at/s and they are great, you need to have a bull bar and about a 1 3/4 lift. it will clear on most occasions.

the 17x9s you are looking at have a high pos offset and will never fit without MAJOR work, like live front end etc.

Even with a live front end you wouldnt want to run such a wide rim on such a positive (standard) offset.

Remember, standard SR5 wheels are 7" wide +30.

these are 9" wide +30, meaning you are loosing an inch of clearance over stock on the inner side of your wheel, thats before you fit a tyre.

No offence but its a lost dream......too narrow a tyre will also pop beads offroad when deflated, damaging the sexy looking rims.

Next option

Agree with Max - Who is the Guru.

If you want the 17", you will need to get a less positive rim e.g. p10 -p 15 (fuel rims & Ballistic make them in this offset) to run the 9” rim. The 265/7x17 is a good option but the 9" rim is too wide as Max said. Maxxis do a 275/70x17 in the bighorn (I believe Tunnel Rat & Crossport run them on a 8.5” & 9" wide rim respectively) this might work on a less positive rim with your 2” lift.

Apart from the above options that’s about it if you want to keep your 2" lift.

Hey guys instead of starting a new thread thought Id tack mine on here. Ive been looking at some 17" x 9" Fuel Boost rims direct from the US ($180 each as opposed to $550 here!). Heres the link if youre interested

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/380307089349 ... 1438.l2649

Im only looking at a 2" lift as my truck will be for touring more than hard core off road. What size tyre could/should I fit? Was thinking Coopers ST's or the like. Whats the largest I can fit with out having to do any massive mods, change diff ratios etc? This will be a 2011 model SR5 Im getting in the next couple of months.

Thanks for your help!

Cheers

Depending on the offset Id be looking at no larger than a 32" diameter and no wider than 11.5" so whatever that works out to be to suit a 17" rim. anything bigger and you'll need to start trimming.

hey guys..

im wanting to upgrade the rims on my hilux, just want to get a decent offset i.e. the wheel to stick out of the guards a bit not a great deal but just to give it the decent stance.

So if im assuming that the standard offset is +30 will 0 offset will that stick out enough?

Im considering getting these wheels,

they are called the standard.
http://www.methodracewheels.com/products/

now the specs on them, are 0 offset and 4.75 will that work well with 2011 model hilux.

I have no lift yet, but was going to run the same tyre size 265/65/17 or i may get new tyres 265/70/17

look forward to your response, im just a little confused on how all the offsets work,

THey should work fine with your current tyres, you may have to remove the front mud flaps.

As for running the 265/70x17 or 32" tyres this may not work without a 2" lift

do you think they will stick out of the guards a bit? i was looking at mann hilux and really like how the offset works on that

Do you have flares?

Size difference is 30.5" to a 32" so there is a bit of difference. See if you can get a test fit and go from there.

Yeah I've got the flares

I just did calculation and it was 12mm larger I assumed that would be ok thanks for bringing that to my attention though

May have too do that lift I guess

Hey guys. I have a 2012 SR Hilux with flares fitted. Looking at putting rims and tyres on.

Wanted to run a 265/65/17 on a 17x8 with 0 offset. I don't have a lift as yet.

Anyone know if this will scrub without a lift or am I better off just going a 245/70/17 on the same rim?

Cheers for the help.

I think if you fitted a 70/17 on a zero offset the tyres wouldnt clear the upper control arms

I have 275/70/R17's on mine with a P20 offset and it just clears them (I have an OME 2" lift)

you would actually have more clearance to run wider tyres with a zero offset, 20mm more in fact.
