Want better fuel economy and and extra 4-10Hp at the wheels.

Postby Drew on Sun, 27 Jun 2010 5:51 +0000

Heres a tip, as some of you would have read recently my truck has seemed to have lost power, been using more fuel and the egts have gone up and up... Well on my quest to fix the problem i was refered to this little gem. It made sense right away as my trouble seemed to start right after the last service, in which they changed my air cleaner !!!.

So heres the tip... every now and then and after every time the air cleaner is changed clean the mass air flow sensor !!!!
I did it and well the power was right back up there, fuel economy droped 2L per 100km back to where it should be. The egts are still a bit high for me though but thats another issue.

Its easy to do just grab a can of Mass Airflow Sensor cleaner from super cheap etc some people use other sprays but these can damage the wires so ues the right stuff. Its that common crc make a specific product to do it. It even says on the can "better fuel economy and 4-10hp at the wheels, use after every air cleaner change"

Image

Next find the mass air flow sensor just after the air cleaner and undo the 2 screws.

http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu240/droooos/P6230062.jpg

Remove the electrical connector and remove the sensor. You will see 2 wires with a little bulb on the end. In layman terms (My speak  ) These wires heat up and the cooling effect of the air passing over them tells the computer how much air is entering the engine and adjusts fuel to suit. So when these wires get dirty with silicone, air filter particles etc (and they can be very dirty but look clean to the naked eye) they have to heat up more to get to the same temp so the ecu thinks there is more air going in and dumps more fuel in than is actualy required.

Make sure not to touch the wires with the spray nozle or fingers etc and do not drop the sensor as they are very sensitive !!!!!
Give it 10-15 good sprays then after it has dried replace the sensor, becareful of the o-ring as mine stretched on removal and had to be careful to get it to seat back in properly.

Now you done and away you go !!!!  Full power is back and better fuel econoomy. This will work with both petrol and diesel models.

Cool, sounds like an ad for CRC  , hafta give it a go though. I wonder how different the spray is from CRC contact cleaner, does it dry instantly?

i use to do this on my old corolla on a regular basis. the other bit to the sensor actually reads the air temperature is what i was told. i use to lean mine with a can of contact cleaner. it just evaporates quickly. i also used a cotton ear plug and would soak it and gently clean the bulb looking part.

Yeh it evaporates off right away. Contact cleaner is prob the same but some people use brake cleaner etc and this can damage it.... I might have to forward it to crc along with my resume lol

And this is a perfect example of why you shouldn’t use any type of “oil filter” like a K&N ETC

I did this to my old mans Nissan Pintara in my younger years via some advice from an older so called "experienced" mechanic.....The CRC I used tore the wire and the car ran like crap....cost me over 300bux for a new sensor.......yeah I was happy......

like drew said, be very careful doing this.......

Yea, mine was pretty dirty, i think im up for a new air filter too.
Thought I'd post a few pics for the petrol heads as the air flow sensor is in a different spot on the V6.

Just undo the two bolts (10mm) on the engine cover and its on the left just behind the air filter.

Guys,

Did mine on Monday, didn't see much dirt or grot on the sensor, but gave it a good spray with the CRC MAF cleaner.

Didn't notice an improvement in power and didn't seem to make any difference to fuel economy either.

I would still recommend doing this periodically anyway... if you don't damage the sensor pulling it out or putting it back then giving it a clean can't hurt can it??

Yeh definatly a worthwhile thing to do even if its just when changing the air filter. I noticed the power and fuel economy come back to where it was the same as i noticed it go out the window lol. So if you notice higher than normal fuel consumption and or a loss of power try it out.

Thanks for the tip Drew. I cleaned mine last week, it was covered in greasy crap. I used a cotton bud too. Already notice less hesitation when planting the boot, i'll fill up on Monday to test fuel consumption.

well ive run 2 tanks of diesel through mine since cleaning the MAF sensor.. and my economy has improved by .4l / 100 (down from 13.0 to 12.6) which is definately good (and thats WITH the sprint booster installed running on green all the time).. so i think it has made a difference to me..

Cheers

Excellent tip Drew.
I noticed someone was thinking about using contact cleaner , just be careful which type you use. I cleaned a $300 Wilco electrical plug at work with the wrong cleaner and it crumbled apart in my hands.
