Towbar- Toyota or aftermarket?

Postby eveyoz on Tue, 26 Apr 2016 10:10 +0000

I'm pricing up a new sr, are there aftermarket options out there?

How do they compare for wiring and bar compared to dealer prices
I'm in SE QLD

hey mate, I went for the MCC 4X4 bar, it has integrating tow point. Looks better and sits higher than the ARB bar or TJM, and just installed the Toyota wiring harness myself.

check out Wynnum Towbars. They come with wiring kit installed for a lot cheaper than genuine. Toyota genuine have also got a smaller tongue so you can't use aftermarket recovery gear etc.

I have the same bar. I much prefer it due to not having the usual drop for the hitch. Then again, I don't tow.

Just be aware that you'll have slight trouble getting a 32" tyre (for reference, I run a 265/75R16, O.D. 813mm) in the spare wheel cavity. I have to push the wheel back while cranking up 'cause if I go straight up, I catch the towbar.

For reference:

Depending on the O.D. of your tyre, your mileage may vary.

Oh, and the part number for that bar is 2136RW.

This information is probably out-dated as it is specific to the '05-'15 models but hey, you might find a '16 equivalent :P

The Hayman Reece is also the only bar (that I know of) that will let you drop a tub tail gate down to the nearly vertical position (goose neck removed). This lets you lift stuff straight onto the tub floor without having to reach over a horizontal tailgate. HR harness worked fine on my 2014.

Definitely can't do this with a Toyota bar.

Hi guys,
I have fitted the ironman rear bar and towbar,Good ground clearance and clearance for larger diameter tyres. The only issues is the j pin position in behind the bar. other wise easy fit with the Ironman Wiring harness.

The standard Haymen Reece is way too low. It's designed to go under the new bumper bar and is obviously not designed for anyone who wants to take there 4x4 off road. With a 3.5t chipper hooked up I have 230mm of ground clearance from the bottom of the tow bar and that is with a 2inch lift. The Hayman Reece is 55mm lower than the standard towbar on my 09 hilux. I ordered the vehicle with a towbar and got this but will have to get another one.

I have the factory tow bar... Haven't towed anything, my only gripe is there doesn't appear to be an anti rattle screw/bolt.so if your luckily enough to tow a poorly balanced trailer the insert is gunna rattle like a bastard.
Not real happy about that.

Also a question for anyone else with a factory tow bar..... Did they give you load rated shackles? Are they supposed to?

Had tow bar fitted to 2016 sr5 comes with shims to reduce slop and rattle. Havnt fitted them yet so don't know how easy it will be to take tongue out after fitting shim pack.

What are the shims like Metal/Plastic? I have the same issue no anti rattle bolt and will be towing. I didn't receive any shims with mine!.

Mine came with the shims, but it still rattles like a bastard......any other ideas?
I'm thinking I might drill and tap my own anti rattle bolt into the bar? :?: :?:

yea i didn't even look at mine cause it rattled so i assumed they weren't fitted, went back to the dealer, and discovered that they were actually fitted... it just still rattles.
the shims were only fitted to 2 sides (bottom and passenger side), they cant fit a 3rd as then it wouldn't fit at all.
ill just put a bit of sika in there as i don't removed it anyway

Mine has the shims too, but still rattles. On my old ute i poked a bit of thick fencing wire in the corner, and bent it so it didnt fall out. Stopped the rattle and lasted ages. Havent done it to the new ute yet but will soon ;)

Could anyone who has a towbar on their n80s post a photo of the bar to show how high its sitting and name the model?

I'm currently looking for one, just not sure which I'd prefer.

Thanks guys.
