Just wondering at which point will Toyota do a recall on this. Or will they continue to do these bandaid type fixes. I'm thinking of getting new hilux and want to hold out till they officially fix this issue. Off topic slightly, are there any other known issues that I need to be aware of prior to purchasing and sr5 auto? Appreciate some feedback. Thanks all.

What's next, our bull bar is making transmission rev its guts out and get stuck in gear? We have gone to Consumer Affairs - next step VCAT.

What do you mean stuck in gear?

What I mean is: when doing 80-90km going down a hill, foot is off the excelerater, car is coasting down the hill - if I so much as touch the brake very lightly the auto drops gears and the revs go up to 4,000 revving its guts out, the car slows down but it's stuck in gear screaming until the road has levelled out at which stage the car corrects itself - in the wet this is very dangerous

Valz, mine does this as well. Toyota programed the auto that way to drop a gear as you would in a manual car. I thought it was a smart feature to preserve the brake pads. And your signal for it to do so is a small tap on the brakes going downhill - and it knows you're going downhill.

I agree when you get to the bottom, the revs remain high for a while before dropping off, but this is a turbo engine and I think Toyota's taken the conservative design to ensure you don't suffer from turbo lag if you need to power out of the bottom in order to go up the next hill. So they made the engine hold the rpms up a bit longer - this keeps the turbo windmilling a bit faster in order to deliver a power boost if required.

It think this car is radically different to the previous model - and as with all new technology, it's radically changed the way it does things. Maybe a bit too radically in some places.

I find that flicking the gear lever into S, and back to D will usually get it to gear up again.

Get a new ranger and you will really have something to complain about.

First I have to admit I had a petrol hilux for 9 years and the only thing I did to it in that time was a set of pads on the front brakes. I was dumb enough to buy a new ranger as the toyota engine was sluggish and It was a lot harsher riding. I soon found out why they ride nice as I took the aluminium tradies body off the hilux and put it on the ranger with my 200 odd kilos of tools and the springs were bent backwards so I had to pay to fix that.
Next was a drama with the elctronics that they need to run the trailer lights. Then it started to cut out and after you waited 5 or 10 minutes it would go again and after a couple of days without a vehicle [Im a tradie so no car no work] they suspected a crank position sensor but would not replace it until it died completely. I paid $440 to buy one and this did fix it.I chased ford australia for about 6 weeks and eventually got my money out of the dealer but ford will not pay them. How does this happen on a 3 month old vehicle.
It kept throwing up random alarms and had the headlights coming on during the day and the radio goes loud for a second or 2 about 9 seconds after you turn the engine off.
One day I started the engine and a few seconds later the radio went off and I could hear relays rattling in the dash so I turned it off and took the key out and the engine was still going,it stopped when I opened the door.
Another problem that is very common is the engine going to sleep for a few seconds when you put your foot down after going slow as in going across an intersection which is exciting if a car is coming. The gear box also sometimes gives a big thump like you have run something over when doing 70 to 80 kmh on light throttle. The gearbox was reprogrammed and it fixed these two issues but about 3000k later they are back.
I think I would be happy to have a bit of a thump rather than have a piece of crap that ford dont want to know about.

Interesting you had lots of issues with the Ranger. I almost bought an XLT Ranger eventually decided to stick with the Hilux i think i made the right choice after hearing this. The biggest regret is not sticking with a manual, not real happy with the auto in the lux but everything else is so far pretty good, mine has a very slight thump occasionally when you pull up but not really an issue

Well I got my 10k service done last week and I had made it a point to ensure that my tail shaft be looked at with the Toyota fix. The seer ice manager knew all too well the problem along with the bad fuel economy on the autos. They had it all day and said they did the tail shaft fix, wasn't replaced but had the splines sanded and regreased apparently, and I must say it hasn't made a clunk or thud since then. It would seem the auto is a lot smoother I find now - whether there was a update installed or because of the tail shaft I don't know but is very nice now. Also my fuel economy has come down a bit to??? As I said, maybe the shaft or update on auto have no idea

I'd always driven manual Hilux - then the co provided this 2016 Auto SR5. I hated it. Engine rev's up and down, kicking up almost random to me with no apparent control.... it took me about 20,000 km's to come to terms with it.

Now I think it's quite a good box for an Auto. There's quite a bit of intelligence in it surprisingly. This makes it do things differently, but it gets there. If you drive it normally like a car, and when you're not in a hurry it's quite refined and smooth. That's very good for a trade vehicle.

So this week, I've even come to terms with the stupid fuel gauge. Its not broken. It's special. & its autistic.

Just about to order 2x SR 4x4 single cabs. Dad wants an auto and after reading all your comments I think I'll be ordering a manual.

The question I would like to know is, has anyone taken ownership more recently that is having these problems with the tailshaft and auto or have they fixed it and the newer ones are good from factory?

Cheers
Dirk.

I got mine late May. Done 2500km. It very occasionally makes a clunk when you stop quickly. But it's hardly a bother. I'll get Toyota to do the grease thing at 10,000km service. Won't be rushing it back in beforehand unless it becomes more noticeable.

The Hilux Auto is fine.

I test drove a Ferrari 458 and the rev jumps around even more & without reason. Coming down a hill you're doing 75km/h and the car holds you in 2nd grear. or the 918 - get to 100km/h and you'll be thinking: ok now, here's a good time to step out of 1st gear into 2nd - so the engine sitting behind my ear don't explode.

I have the same problem with the thud on my new hilux. Canterbury Toyota have agreed to replace the shaft with an upgraded part due to arrive in 2 months. At least they have accepted that there is an issue. ;)

Boys, new to the forum and took my Hilux to the dealership this morning for the shift shock/thud issue! I can't believe I found you guys! Mine has been booked in for "temporary" work around. He mentioned "clamps"? Anyone aware of this step?
I've also spoken to the dealer and said I want it replaced and they've told me they don't replace they try and fix first but if I want it replaced they can do it first but it will not be covered by warranty!

Hi guys, went to the dealer again today.... same answer "we have herd nothing from Toyota about a new part"

Could you please give me the details of the dealer that replaced the shaft for you, I will call the direct and ask about the specifics so I have some evidence to go back to my dealer with.
