What kinda engine longevity are you expecting?

Postby wadey88au on Wed, 14 Dec 2016 7:49 +0000

Hi, new here.. Currently trying to decide which Ute I'll be trading my patrol in on in the new year... You can't trust 99% of the written "journalism" so I'm trolling through the forums, where the real knowledge is.

I read that the pistons in the 2.8L motor are coated in some sort of silica reinforced porous aluminium - supposedly a world first. This makes me a little hesitant to be honest. Just the words porous, silica and aluminium don't make me feel good when thinking about a high friction/combustion application.

Have these motors been proven elsewhere? Any engineers on the board can explain why I shouldn't be worried?

Cheers.

Just a couple things off the top of my head....

The new 1GD diesel doesnt use a timing belt as the 1KD did, it uses a chain and tensioner, thus less maintainenance required as it should in theory last longer.

They dont use buckets and shims for the valves as the previous 1KD did, they use valve rocker arms.

Yeah I liked the chain tensioner... starting to lean more this way than the Ranger... not having an auto in the extracab will be the big compromise for me.

Cheers for reply - didn't know about the replacement of the bucket & shims.

Whatever they used for fabrication, by definition these things are designed "for life."

But even like how we threat ourselves, there's a huge bell curve difference within our population.
Even if we know better, people drink, smoke and spend wasteful hours in front of the TV....

So whether a Hilux gets to live a healthy or a hard life, it is totally up to you.

well you would hope the blocks and internals are good for at least 300,000 klm.
i have a personal dislike for the EGR system it adds to much complexity to the engine and too many more parts , hoses , wiring , etc that can go wrong.
I also dislike the complex DPF unit and hope it can be cleaned out / rebuilt down the track.

I do like the inline fuel filter at the commonrail which will catch any bits should the main HP pump destroys itself.

we shall see i guess

Well, the mine sites here in WA are still sticking with the Hiluxs.... & These guys should know, they operate in remote locations and they've got to fix these things themselves when they break down.

Mining companies keep very good records and they have full maintenance and operational costings on the whole project life cycle of the car and so they have accurate numbers to proof what works best for their mining applications.

Typically the Hilux I come across are new, but occasionally you do see a well kept 450000 km car.

These over 400,000 km cars are usually the supervisor personnel mine assigned vehicle, so they're not as scratched up like the average minesite working Hilux. And the supervisors forgo retiring their vehicle because they're just satisfied with the equipment and it's working fine.

The Hiluxes are just tough. You have to give it to them.
They get driven all day on corrugations and then do the occasional river crossing, with nothing breaking or falling off.

If you're a supervisor and the Hilux was an employee, of course you'll keep him. Age is just a number.

I don't think the timing chain is much of an improvement - after years of stretched timing chains and worn tensioners on dirt bikes, I'm pretty happy with how easy maintenance on the 1KD timing belt and tensioner is.

I have been very lucky with the valve buckets too - they all are in-spec after 300,000kms.

A fair contrast to my easy to maintain 1KD is the family xtrail, which has 310,000km on it. It has a timing chain and the chain tensioner is a world of pain. The xtrail has otherwise than a head gasket, been great to us.

I have the 1GRFE V6 and expecting many hundreds of thousands of km's from it. By all accounts it's one of toyota's most bulletproof and reliable engines, thus far hasn't skipped a beat (160k, 2007 model).

If it doesn't last 3 years I would certainly not buy another one
