Expected Engine warm up time ?

Postby master_manoj on Wed, 24 Aug 2016 7:18 +0000

Hello All

Thank you for the amount of info that's in here.
It does really help in understanding how the new hilux is performing.Apart from the tail shaft thud it seems to be performing great.i do understand not every one is experiencing the same issue.
I am abt to finalise Sr or SR5 Auto (Diesel)soon.
Just wanted to ask u owner out there "Every morning specially in Winter Do I still have to let the engine warm up like the pre 2015 model"
In my current model I do have to wait 3-5 mins or sometimes more when it has a cold start.

Any comments or advise would be really helpful
Thank you in advance
Happy to be directed to another post if this has been covered already for 2016 models.
Cheers

Hello master_manoj

I live in Goulburn NSW and i often start the Hilux in negative temperatures. I don't wait for a warm up BUT i do have a 1K long driveway. So this is my warm up time. The dash display gives you a driving score and a part of that is worked out on how long after you start the engine before you start to drive. The longer you wait the worse the score.

Cheers

Do you have to? No.
Should you? Yes.

Just my opinion on any engine made of metal and lubricated with oil.

I wait till oil pressure is up, then I go, I just drive with little throttle, and keep rpm low,
Letting your engin warm is only 1 of 5 oil filled components, where the oil viscosity xchanges from cold to hot,
farting is alot like jxxxxxg off. both provide instant gratification, but neither is a long term solution to the actual problem......................

Normally 7-10 Deg winters. I don't normally wait for a warm up as such however I start the car moment I get in and take about 30s to put on the seat belt find the radio, wait for the GPS to connect.... taking it slowly, prior to driving off. And it's about 800m of 25-45km/h before getting to the main road where it's 60km/h.

This Hilux takes real long to warn up. Because it I'm usually into 10 minutes and by the time already doing 100km/h down the highway before I noticed that everything's up to steady state temp.

I note the Gen 8 Hilux engine oil is also very low viscosity. Same as my Hybrid which is 0W20 - which works cool.

Hey Chancha_Blanca

Hello All

Thank you for the insight really appreciate it.

Hey Chancha_Blanca

Though i live in mascot i work in (Eastern creek) which is approx 100 kms return trip.the hilux sits in the car park for approx 8 hrs before i start driving back home.

so before driving back home i am still sitting in the car for 7-10 mins to wait for the right temp coz as soon as i get out of the car park i am on M4 doing 100+.

If i wait 10 mins for the engine to warm up back and forth to work i am spending 20 mins each day which for a week accumulates to 2+ hrs

sometimes not every one has 5-7 mins to warm up the engine before they start driving.

I was leaning towards the Petrol option whic toyo claims will be consuming 12l/100 kms but once i load it up with the 4wd gear i am sure it will jump to 15/100 which will be too costly too run

and the very reason i want to buy a new diesel model is bcoz my current 2006 d4d in winter takes 7-10 mins to warm up which sometimes  me

Or may be its the oil FUll synthetic) that my Mechanic is using which is taking a lot longer to warm up the engine

My colleague had a Mitsi ML (2015) and he doesn't have to warm up even for a minute. :?

Sorry i dont intend to open a can of worms here

Cheers

It isn't necessary to warm up, just an ideal, as long as you wait long enough to circulate the oil you should be OK. 30sec to 1min should do. Especially if the car is a daily driver the oil should stick to the bearings etc but if left standing for a week or more it is more important to take more time. Just take it easy for a couple of mins til you see the temp rise. No flat foot, just a trundle for the first couple of kilometers will do.

Synthetic oil will protect against cold start but just take it easy for a bit.

Ive always found if you turn it on and leave it idling, it will take the better part of a week to warm up. needs some revs and load. Like Gipsy said, I just drive conservatively until its warm, but certainly getting moving warms them up faster.

I use my scan gauge as my indicator when to drive . Not the Toyota temp gauge .

If you use the warm up button and it's kept garaged maybe 3 minutes and it's 50 degrees .

OK thanks, I think my original comments stand, 30 second warm up and drive like it has a bomb in it for a couple of k. ;)

5. You’re not Letting Your Engine Warm Up
Don’t be that guy who starts his cold engine and immediately revs it up. The only thing you’re showing off is that you don’t know your turbo and engine bearings won’t get lubricated properly with cold, thick oil. Let your engine warm up like you warm up in the morning. Let the glow plugs and intake heater do their job. Fire the engine and give it some time for the combustion heat to warm the engine evenly.
This practice is very important on extremely cold mornings. Hot and cold engine parts expand at different rates, so gaps can form, which could cause leaks or gasket failures. Wait until your engine oil and coolant temperature gauges show you are in the right operating range. You do have these readings…don’t you? Also, if it’s really cold, don’t turn the steering wheel too much right away or you could risk blowing a hydraulic hose. The other thing that’ll keep your engine running longer is preheated coolant. The more cold-starts your diesel is subjected to, the shorter its lifespan will be. Inconsistent metal expansion and poor-flowing (thick) lubricants don’t provide protection from moving parts.

I didn't suggest you rev the tits off it did I? If you do the full warm up that is always the correct way, I merely suggest if you have limited time 30-60 seconds is a MINIMUM but with everything you don't get a free lunch... if you don't want anything which may wear your engine... leave it in the shed and catch a train! :?
