Slight crunch in my gear box

Postby SR-5 on Fri, 28 May 2010 7:54 +0000

hey ppl,

Ive had this car since and i notice after a few thousand kms that my 2nd gear has a slight crunch when first driven in the morning. It goes away after warmed up but you can still feel 2nd is not as smooth as the rest of the gears.

Do i have a problem here or its a commom thing for the hulix??? Maybe the clutch isnt fully disengage??? My 10k service is almost due and im goin to mention this to them and see that they say. Sounds abit worrying to me

2nd gear synchro sounds like its worn.....do you have floor mats coz sometimes they dont allow the clutch pedal to depress 100% and over time this can contribute to worn synchro....that and race changes....

My Hiace does this when cold & has since new with no problems yet (90,000km). I can feel it in the Hilux for the fist 5-10 minutes as well but am not sure if it will result in problems down the track (7000km). A mate’s Mazda does the same thing so who knows…

My truck used to grate going 2nd to 3rd when I first got it. I replaced the gearbox oil with Nulon 75-80W semi synthetic and it pretty much fixed the problem.

Hi SR5
My gearbox felt very notchy at first when I bought it as well. Another thing that may also contributing is driver position. Are you fully depressing the clutch pedal all the way, is your seat too far back...
When mine is cold, I double deshuffle up. It helps a heap. I have always double deshuffled down as well to save the syncros. These things when there warm are pretty easy to drive without a clutch as well. Just like a truck gearbox..

I have this issue too. The link below takes you to the topic:

Basically the response i got was "all the new cars do that". My concerns are recorded, and will keep bringing it up at each subsequent service.

After complaining at every service, the manager finally booked me a date with the toyota rep. You can imagine the crap i have to go through with this guy. One line that really impress me was " trust me its normal". after i threaten him with goin to department of fair trading he did finally agree that he did feel a notch so he decieded out of his good will that the gear box will be pulled apart and not replace with a new one. He said he had the same problem with another hilux and reckons there are a fault in some of the boxes yaddy yaddy yaddy.

They claimed to have found the problem and have put a shim in the 2nd gear somewhere which should have rectify the problem. My verdict is some what the same. There are moments that the gear is fine then its not. Abit disapointing cause its so much effort chasing these guys cause i have to take time off work etc etc and still didnt get any better! But there is more. I now realise that i can pull my 1st gear into neutural while underload  .

To be continued.....
