Yeah I got no problems with getting lockers but I got a heavy right foot on the road and the thought of an open diff would give me the shits

To lock or not? For me an easy question, but each to their own. It boils down to what you want your lux to do, and how you want to use it. :?: :?:

Most of the lockers held up and the axle broke, but from memory the air lockers held up with out a scratch.
That's the main reason why I got the air lockers front and rear.
My diff specialist also said he recommends air lockers for front and rear in hilux's but elockers in the heavier 4x4 with V8s like the cruisers and Pootrolls

My lockers and awesome and work great, however they have only been on for the last 10000km.

Any idea why he doesn't recommend the e-locker in the Hilux mate?

He said something about being over the top and that the air locker is more than enough.
But he did say if I didn't have on board air he would recommend the Elocker as it would be cheaper than buying an air compressor and air locker.
He then went on to say if it was a cruiser we would recommend e locker in the rear over the ARB air locker even if I already had on board air. Not 100% why but think its something to do with the weight of the cruisers.

Traditionally we use lockers be it ARB air locker, TJM pro-locker, Detroit, Lockright etc for off road situations.

Here's a link for your info.

http://www.offroaders.com/tech/limited- ... ntials.htm
http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_li ... mparo.html

The only potential problem I see when using a locked differential on street (hard surfaces) is when you take corners. Straight line should be ok.

Having said that in the context of street or hard surfaces, if you are using a ARB air locker you can disengage the locker on corners to prevent potential issues. But you would have to remember to switch it off and then on again after taking the corner.
In this instance a Detroit or Lockright automatic locker would be a better choice as it will engage on straight line and disengage automatically when taking corners.

you answers have been very helpful. thanks brandon.

nice articles too. i get it now.

Anyway, saw some vids on youtube and this was why I asked the qns.

that guy was pushing it like crazy, going round and round and round with the lock on.

I've read all this great advice here, but I'm still undecided as to the best solution for my situation. I have a 2wd Hilux SR tray back, ie; not much weight at the rear when empty. I don't go off road, except the occasional dirt road. My problem is my steep driveway. When it's wet I get half way up and then stop with one rear wheel spinning. I'm turning too because the drive is s-shaped curve.

Because of the curvature I'm thinking the best solution is an auto-locker (Detroit?) but the advice here suggests an air locker for on-road use. Are there other solutions?

ARB lockers... The air compressor is a bonus when U need to air down or pump up tyres..

if they can't supply, the next best option (imo) would be a yukon grizzly (same as what I have)

Going up a steep curved driveway with a locked rear diff sounds like a recipe for disaster.

The reality could be far less extreme though.

I'm with Aaron here. If ur struggling to get up there and then hammer it in the wet around a corner with an auto locker ur goin straight up Tokyo drift my friend. Park on the street is my suggestion haha

sorry, missed the bit about the driveway. steep+windy can be painful with an autolocker

LSD is what you need ie. some slip, but not to much

re-seal the driveway with some of that rough textured pebble stuff to give you more grip driving up.

Thanks for all your advice guys. I have used my driveway as an example here, but the lack of traction in the wet with no load can cause problems anywhere, it's the ute that needs sorting out rather than my driveway.

So, I should be looking at the Detroit truetrack (Limited slip) rather than a standard detroit which I think is like a locker, but engages automatically?

On road use get the LSD, for off road use look at the locker. Pretty straight forward.
