Finally, Upgraded CV Joints/Driveshafts

Postby toyboata on Thu, 14 Jun 2012 11:56 +0000

I just checked the RCV PERFORMANCE website and their shafts definitely look like the best I've seen. So if anyone has the coin to fork out for some they're $1995USD per pair plus freight.
They look bulletproof and I might have to find some extra $$$ to invest in some once the 35's are on.

With the Rcv shafts are the Tacoma ones a perfect fit?

FJ Cruiser/Prado have the same inner spline count but different outer spline count on their shafts, hence different hubs.

not interchangeable.

Tacoma to hilux is not 100% confirmed....happy to be proven wrong.

I sent these blokes an email 2 weeks ago and still havent got a response.

Yeah thanks man. I actually have this bookmarked already on my browser. :)
I think the question is how many splines are the stock C/Vs 30 inner and 30 outter
Also is the stock length 25.5" compressed?
More than this I'm not sure, but this seems to be the important info they posted on their site about the shafts.

I can confirm the following because I have a Shaft from a 2011 Hilux KUN26 ready for my truck on my shed floor right now and just measured it:

Outer
Spline count: 30
Spline Dia: 32.5mm

Inner
Spline Count: 30
Spline Dia: 32.5mm

Compressed length: 633mm
Image
This is about 10mm less than the 25.5" RCV shaft but the extra length is better for a tripod type factory inner joint (and assuming aftermarket shafts) for lifted applications. For lifted applications a big problem is that the tripod rollers of the inner joint are riding nearer to the outer edge of the cup, much worse at full droop. This can cause the tropod the force it's way out of the cup which ejects the the shaft and tripod. This imobilises the vehicle until either the tripod is re-assembled the shaft inserted into the inner cup or the complete shaft is replaced. This happened to me.

This ejection force can cause other damage (diff mounts, diff housing etc)

A diff lowering kit will help reduce this problem and also these tripod type inner joints are much weaker at high angles so it helps with that too. I have a kit coming.....

These RCV shafts have a different type of inner joint and look MUCH stronger.... Big bucks though :?

If only the budget was unlimited....

Max,
I wouldn't say the monster rides driveshafts are better than the RCV ones. I assume the Monster Rides shafts still only have 3 bearings per knuckle and don't allow increased angles? The drive shaft lengths will allow more travel but not angle. And Repco offer an extended drive shaft for $180ish. For $500 more per drive shaft you'd want a lot more than just thicker side walls in the same material as standard. The rcv are by far the best in my opinion. http://www.rcvperformance.com/ I'm keen to bust another drive shaft assembly so I can justify a set.

Has anyone used Australian Cv joints and power steering. It's a Brisbane based company just off moss street at springwood. A mate that works for Toyota has recommended me go to them for new cv joints over going genuine Toyota.
Would be good to speak to someone that's dealt with them before

Change your driving style. no reason to blow a cv unless the driving is not suiting the conditions.

unless your racing, or running big chunky rubber regularly offroad, I dont see the point in using RCV's as awesome as they are.

Is there a certain reason you need upgraded shafts?

If your not doing a custom setup or asking for more droop than is available then stock shafts will be fine. Focus on reliability with your setup and lockers and tyres.

wanting to build a tuff rig to do tuff tracks without the anxiety of snapping a cv. I got 2' lift (2-4" adjustable planned), diff drop, 31's (33-35's planned), rear elocker (fronts planned). Do alot of solo trips and hard tracks but would love to do harder. My goal is to make her as tuff as I can so i thought id start at her driveline and weed out the week links then other upgrades from there such as engine, brakes, cooler and turbo, protection etc etc the list goes on as we well know. But yeah drivetrain is top priority for me atm.
