freddy10_9 wrote:This is a really good thread and I hope I haven't missed the question I am about to ask, sorry in advance if I have. Does the latest 2011model Hilux with standard 17" rims (steel or sr5 mag) have the same size rotors and discs as the previous 2010 on 15" sr5 mag rims.
Thanks Freddy

someone correct me if im wrong.

the sr5 dualcab 2011(update) run the 17' larger brakes with vsc. i have been informed recently the the Sr dualcab has the factory option for vsc , in this case the vehicle is supplied with what looks like a 120 series steel rim 17' (with round holes) and inturn the larger rims calls for the flares factory fitted (all on a tub dual cab not a cab chasis) Confused ??? cause i was when i asked. The extracab has no option for vsc ATM and is supplied with a newer looking rim 15" tho.

someone also thought the 17' steel rim on the the vsc specs sr could be from a base fj cruiser sold in the states ?????

cheers Tim

that is right...the SR DUAL CAB ONLY is optional now with VSC whichmeans it gets steel 17" wheels and bigger brakes.

no they are not from the base model FJ in the states...the FJ in the states runs a black steel wheels 17x7.5 with +15 offset while the hilux runs a steel 17x7.5 with +30 offset.

This sounds like the next upgrade (after i fit the Detroit TrueTrak to the rear and the E-Locker to the front!).....So my question is...Does the Prado 120 Series Rotors (Discs) bolt straight up to the hilux hubs ??? Also i am running Patrol GU Steelys so will these clear ?

easiest way to get it to work is to run 17" wheels.....then no problems with clearance.

regarding the GU Steelies...they are 16x8, so may require modifying the caliper if they fit at all...easier to go 17's

The prado brakes are an easy bolt-on upgrade if you have the wheels that can clear them.

Thsnks Scottsr20. Upgraded to factory 17's, so asume should be ok? Does it matter with newer model Hilux's the donar brakes from a Prado should they be an equivalent year? Ie I have a 2010 Lux, would I need to find a 2010 Prado etc? Or is just a particular Prado series I would need? Thanks.

Hahaha...BUGGER.....I had a set of Prado Wheels on it and pissed them off because of the lack of tyre choice (also they looked shit (IMO)....THEN i put these SPEEDY 16" Steelies on now i'm putting GU wheels on...Oh well, i'll just have to get out the grinder !!!

grinder doesnt always work as I found out.

with my dynamic wheels there was enough diameter clearance but the inner rib on the steel wheel was fouling on the side of the caliper...I wouldnt recomend grinding that bit for fitment.

tried an 80 series GXL wheel and again there was enough diameter clearance bt not enough side clearance....spacers for a big offset might have helped but I wasnt up for that.

ROH Trak 11 wheels I heard work with some grinding.

Hi guys. New to the site, and I definately don't recommend the grinder from recent experience. Took about 3mm off the side of the calipers, and they sprung pin hole leaks. $2,200 Aussie dollares for 2 new one's. Nearly had a heart attack. Luckily I found some 2nd hand ones, and are now in the process of applying longer wheel studs, and 7mm spacers, so the 0 offset wheels fit.

Negative on that one dute, can't make an upgrade as they can't get a hilux to do all the testing on and it's abit difficult with the 4wd hub assembly. Shanon (manger) mentioned maybe a bigger brake booster to clamp the pads harder. Otherwise to some Dba slotted rotors and decent pads...

I spoke with Shannon today at Hopper Stoppers and he wasn't really interested in sorting a solution  They do have a disc brake conversion that they put on minning vehicles ($2,800), but not really road vehicles. He did say that the booster was not big enough on the Hilux and that there isn't a fix for this at the moment :? (not sure but I reckon there is lots of different boosters out there and 1 of them would have do the job....). He also said slotted rotors and TRW pads are your best bet. His Number 1 recommendation was to take off the bigger tyres and put standard size ones back on along with standard height suspension and spring rates :!: He also said, and this was a bit strange, "I know what you guys are trying to do with your Hiluxs"  He has no idea what I'm trying to do with my Hilux, he only knows my first name (because I told him). All I did was ring with an enquirey for a rear brake upgrade on the Hilux following up from his web site which states "Are available - Details soon"

Sorry, off my soap box now
Cheers Rod
