Just gotta a price from snake racing on diff gear's........

4.1 ratio and 4.5 ratios for the front only, that is only Crown and Pinon Set is $920 :shock:

for the rears in the same ratios is $680.......

Snake Oil Merchants if you ask me.....you can get new gears atleast 40% cheaper than that elswhere and brand new too......bloody rip offs !

I've been meaning to ask where the best place to buy gears is. I've heard there are some cheap rubbish on the market that we need to stay away from.

I'd personally and only in my opinion recommend locktup 4x4 in perth....also depends on what raatio you are after........you can get the 4.5 diff ratio new for 430 bux per side.....these ones are the just gears diffs from the states so they fit the smaller carrier (3.73 and below)

they also sell 4.8's for same price but these ones need the prado carrier.

if your dead set on 4.1's....try a wrecker or try genuine toyota......will be the same price from toyota as snake racing......

Ok i have a question about what setup should i use, i have an auto 2008 hilux diesel d4d, i am running 33" tires and want to change ring and pinon on the front and tha back and want to fit a locker in the back, so what should I buy?

4:1 Crown Wheel and Pinions are the best match for your truck. Maybe consider locking the front first as that will work out cheaper as you will need to buy the front Prado Diff carrier to fit the Ring and Pinion. This adds $360 to it.

If you update change your diff gearing the right front locker is the RD111 which includes its own carrier so you save the $360 cost of the part

But i dont want to lock the front, only the rear, if i only change the ring and pinon then can i just add the rear locker and be done with it. another question, I have to buy 4,1 ring and pinon for what dana diff? I mean i want to order the parts i need from www.justdifferentials.com but the part numbers posted on the thread dont show up when i do a search.

just diffs will tell you the same thing....to run 4.1 you need to change the carrier unless you run the 4.5 thick cut gear which doesnt need the front carrier changed.

your call......360 bux for the prado carrier or add abit more and get the locker to suit the prado gears...

If you want to lock the rear, and regear, you need to buy a new carrier for the front axle and this will cost you $360. There is no getting round it. So later if you decide to lock the front, you will throw the diff carrier you paid $360 for away!

That is why I suggested you lock the front first... to save you $360. Nothing to stop you locking the rear only though but in the front you need a Diff carrier and the Ring and pinion.

A question Rod.

In the above where you quote the 3.909 gears it states that the teeth are 43:11
I presume thats 43 crown wheel and 11 pinion?

Does this mean that we could get away with just changing the pinion when changing from 3.583???

Will be doing this on the new truck and want to get it right.

Correct, but the Crown wheel and pinion are machined as a matched pair. If you replace one, you have to replace the other with it's mating part, so you can't just replace half the pair! I wish it was that simple!

EDIT: to clarify, so if you use the 43 crown, you have to use it's matching 11 tooth pinion gear.

It would be awesome if it was that simple. Unfortunately like Rod said thy are a matched pair and would not mesh. The Helix angles on the gears would not be interchangable.
Warren, are you keeping the beast??? Or performing surgery on the new one???

New Beast - the lure of the 50% tax write off is to good.

Already sold the old one to my brother in law. Just need to arrange the delivery and fitout opefully before the Movember trip.

slight hitch.

Toyota have never stocked or sold the 3.9 or 4.1 Prado front gears in Australia. They can order in from Japan.

Must be a strong diff then!!!!

Yes they do....current turbo diesel Prado with 5 speed auto runs the 3.9:1 diff ratio

Prado 120 with the 2.7 petrol 5 speed manual and 4 speed auto had 4.5:1

Prado 120 with the 1KZ turbo diesel and 5 speed manual and 4 speed auto had the 4.1:1

So you have a selection of viable gearing alternative if you scour the wreckers for low kilometre examples and swap them over with your own centres.

They do list the parts they just don't stock them here and are listed as "not for reorder" by Toyota Aus.

I'm getting a new vehicle so I want to put in new CW&P.

A mate is getting them for me at a reasonable price - better than one of the 2nd hand prices I was quoted!!

I agree mate....but just because you cannot get them new from Toyota (which would cost you heaps more than aftermarket anyway....well, except for Snake Racing), it does not mean they are not available.....you just have to source them from a wrecker from the actual vehicle which may be a cheaper alternative for some people.

Thats why I specified exactly which vehicles they come from so those that want to can go hunt them down from the Salvage Yards.

The the whole point of the gearing bible...list where you can get gearing options from both new and used.

Hey thats cool. I was using the part numbers listed .

The order system has been opened up to allow us to order them now specially from Japan - around two weeks.

I'm getting the 3.9s as I run 32s.

Chased up several diff specialists locally and they all quoted me back the Toyota part number - they have never supplied these as new - (speaks well for the strength of the front diffs!!)

Local wreckers wanted over 500 and I had to remove them!!!!

Would recommend the 2nd hand route as Toyota list is over $1000 (i'm not paying that much!!)
