ABS stopped working but no warning light

Postby BillyGoatCountry on Sat, 19 Aug 2023 7:30 +0000

I had to stomp on the brakes today and noticed there was no ABS chatter in the brake pedal.

I tested it a few times on a quiet back street after that and the ABS is definitely no longer working , plus my stopping power is less.

There is no ABS warning light on the dash.

I checked all the fuses under the steering column and in the fuse box under the bonnet and they are fine , where else can i look to diagnose this issue ?

If i cant diagnose it myself , Who has a brake expert they recommend and trust in Western Sydney that i could take it to ?

I dont have a scan tool.

thankyou

Check your brake booster
Did you test it with 2 wheels in the dirt if you were on black top the wheels would have grip

Yes Dave , i had the same thoughts on the vacuum booster , i will put a vacuum gauge on it somewhere but if thats working correctly then its out of my depth to test any further.

I tested the brakes on a rough rural road and there was zero feedback bounce in the pedal. :?

Interesting question.

I noticed 2 months ago when i did the rear wheel bearings that the fluid in the front calipers was pale / clear while the rear slaves had blue fluid when i bled them , however yesterday i bled the entire system and there is fresh blue fluid showing at every wheel.

It made no difference , ABS is still not working and there is no ABS warning light.

Also the cruise control stopped working today , no function lights showing at all.. . . . .

Cruise control & other things going out almost sounds like some kind of central control unit, or something electrical. Just thinking as I'm typing, have you done any deep water crossings or in some way given it a bath? Maybe look along the lines of tracing an electrical or computer fault?

Yeah true , hopefully a scan tool shows the issue , i am not going to try and diagnose beyond this point , some jobs are best left to the experts with the expensive diagnostic tools.

No water crossings , i did give it a wash 5 years ago but can probably discount that one.

Another post was just talking about a "Hilux renowned" earth fault on or near the firewall.

You will have to chase the wires and check each plug there will be wires that run off and go to studs on the body and one that of the linked items.
You can start at the ABS unit and work back or under the dash and don't forget around the glovebox Toyota put bits of things everywhere.

You will learn to be a contortionist  :|

I've just spent a while looking without success. The take away is to check ALL earth points & connections are good quality AND in tack. The thread I was reading was an unrelated subject and I only browsed past it. If you're really keen to find in then try searching threads with updates in the past 2 weeks. As I said though, it was unrelated to your issue, the take away I got was to make ALL earth points are good.
As Dave.G says, it is NOT an enviable task, let us know how you get on.

How do you blokes go about checking earths? Its a bit pointless checking every earth you need the wiring diagram so you know which earth your checking.

As an electrican I cant do that. pulling things apart for no reason is how gremlins are caused to my way of thinking.
Put the mulit meter on millivolts attach it to the negitive battery teminal turn everything one and probe each earth looking for a voltage.

One thing i forgot .... I fitted new LED headlights to my vehicle 3 weeks ago , could that have caused these problems ?

I read somewhere today that some vehicles require a CANBUS adaptor if going to LED globes ? ? ? ?
