Diff ratio of V6.

Postby gjohnson on Mon, 09 Feb 2009 10:50 +0000

Does anyone know the diff ratio of the V6? I have tried searching and found lots of ratios for all sorts of engines except the 4 litre. Also tried the toyota website under specifications. Still nothing.
Also would the diff ratio change if airlockers were fitted? As I know the limited slip capability is totally removed.
Cheers.
Greg.

Current spec is 3.583. This is the same as the Manual TD engine. When they fit lockers the crown wheel and pinion stay (the ratio) and they change the diff centre (carrier)

I am currently looking at ways to improve the final drive ratio and it looks like it can be done but you need to change the front diff centre to a Prado unit to allow the fitment of 3.9 and above gear ratios. If you change to a diff lock for the front you could get the Prado unit which comes with a new centre and get some gears from the states. 32" tyres would go great with 4.1 gears - puts it back to standard. 4.55 are available as well which would make it great offroad but rev pretty high on the h'way.

Thanks for that Warren. I am assuming the auto and manual vehicles use the same ratio as well?

In the V6 yes. The D4D auto has a 3.7 ratio

Just Differentials in the States sells a 4.5 : 1 diff ratio for the hilux that is a thick cut gear, which means it will fit the standard 3.73:1 carrier that the hilux's have, so it doesnt require a carrier change.

with 33" tyres this ratio would be great.

i think if some made a lower 1st gear for the hilux it would be just as benafical offroad and over terraine where you dont need 4x4 but want to go slower than the bloody 40km 1st gear, this as well as 4.11 diff ratios would be awsome. we shouldent have to do all this to hiluxs just to make them capeble the should come out with it like the lancruiser

Couldn't agree more with tgibbo. It'd be great to have a lower first gear, slightly bigger diff ratio and be able to fit bigger diameter tyres without having to alter the speedo! Then the clutch might have a chance of lasting a bit longer! I think the TRDs have a bigger diameter tyre, so they probably have different diff ratios. (And perhaps a tougher clutch?) Perhaps MMaaxx could clarify this.

The TuRDs were all auto for the very same reasons we’re discussing I reckon

Agreed, The TRD's were auto to handle the power. And they have the same diff ratios as standard. The extra increase in diameter would still be within manufacturers tolerances and you'd find was actually closer to being accurate than an sr5 is.

tgibbo, did ya see the price of the 4.88:1 ratio? cheaper yet.....I keen on getting this at some stage in the future, not near future but when Im ready to run 35's.

Pitty, Id have to change me front air locker to accomadate the ratio then.

yeah, I wish toyota put the 5 speed auto in the hilux, then first gear would have been shorter.

shame really, these are supposed to be "offroad" vehicles, but they have just softened em up that little bit too much.

another option for you guys is to fit a 2nd transfer case.....just 1 extra lever that will allow you to select a crawler gear when in low range.

thats another option down the line, would save me changing diff ratios and air lockers. Inchworm in the states makes em...called a "Lefty" do a search. ;)

That the mob I mentioned earlier or in another thread.

they make the thick cut gear that doesnt require another carrier.

but note....4.56:1 is for a 33 to 35 inch tyre. if you run a 32 you'll find it revving too high for comfort and taking off the line spinning the wheels :o

not always a bad thing but may damage the new gears you put in.

just my 2 cents

Lefty would be the ultimate. Actually 33's 4.56 and lefty would make everything great offroad. Now just need to look at SAS........nooooooooo

lefty will be on my "to-do" list probably in a year or two. wait till then and we'll do it together.

the other option is the marks adaptors kit that will fit a mid 90's geared transfer and then clock it when you fit it so you get more clearance under the belly.

or...like rod suggested, just fit an atlas transfer case....very small...very tuff....im assuming very expensive!
