Bang, Whiiiiiir, what's that smell? It's the Diff!!

Postby Lately Lux on Tue, 25 Nov 2008 10:45 +0000

Well, on my way to the Gym for my personal training session when I hear this bang then whiiiiring sound. Pull over and can smelldiff oil :o
Get out, have a look under the back to see a nice 20 cent piece hole in the back of the diff.

Problems...

Oversize wheels and ARB Diff Lock mean NO WARRANTY
Waiting for tilt tray to take to mechanic.

bugger!

I been there before mate....not nice.

I feel for ya.

Some meber here the other day said he had a spare diff centre, do a search of recently discussed topics last day or two.

How many kays on the hilux?

its not gonna be cheap. the best you can do cost wise is to pull the centre out yourself and then take it somewhere to get the gears replaced.

what a bummer.

Thanks for the responses guys, I should know the extent of the damage tomorrow. Will see what I need to do then.

Here are the photo's.

That hole looks supiciously like the head of a crown wheel bolt. Hope it didn't break and teeth while it was flying around in there.
Oh well, I'll just get them to weld some Diff Guards on when they weld up that hole!!

Id look into that abit more....I wouldnt have thought a crown wheel bolt would go flying off

I may be mistaken thou, but I would expect the teeth to shear before the bolt goes flying out.

you were driving normally werent you at the time? yeah?

you werent dropping the clutch hard or gassing it hard were ya?

Dont hold your breath but if it was a crown wheel bolt that has come off Id be atleast wanting to have a chat to toyota tech head quarters to get their opinion on it.

Yeah, bigger tyres and diff lock, but that does not involve touching the crown wheel bolts......may well get it under warrantee.

when disassembly is taking place, try and be there if possible and see if there actually is a bolt missing there.

Make sure there is a witness to it, and if so, take some pics if possible and contact toyota.

let me know how ya go.

Brett,

I reckon you've been shot in butt by a driver of one of those other utes    bastards....

All jokes aside, what a pain in the butt, sorry  , when mine stopped working I was at the bottom of a very long slippery hill in Coffs, no tilt trays there    ... know the frustration.

Hope all goes well with the repair and possible warrantee claim mentioned earlier.

Thanks again guys, I'll take the advice and be there when it's pulled apart. Good thing I have a good relationship with the mechanics, they won't mind me being there but they will probably throw me on the tools too.

Well I was right, it was the crown wheel bolt... or I should say BOLTS!!!! Out of 10 bolts I could only see 2!! bolts still connected, even thought they were LOOSE!!! :o

The diff is completely stuffed, even have to rebuild the locker!!

ARB look like they are coming to the party and are going to fix it. Thank the wholy cause it would be about $3000 to do it, housing and all.

Crown wheel bolts must have been installed by ARB not Toyota, ARB fit your crown wheel and pinion to their case

That just bad workmanship, forgot the loktite

Ah ha! Looking at the pic does mak it clearer somewhat. I was under the impression the it was just the centre that gets changed like in an auto locker.

so what exactly is ARB going to cover? just their locker or the whole job?

how long has the locker been in there for?
