10mm extended CV on one side only??

Postby hendoshane on Fri, 19 Aug 2011 1:26 +0000

I'm after a little advice regarding CV replacement.

I broke my first CV on the weekend up at Landcruiser Park. I did everything wrong...wheel in the air, in reverse trying to get out of some holes, full steering lock and plently of gas when the wheel landed and grabbed then I heard the bang.

I've just had the CV replaced by the local drivetrain specialist. They recommended I replace the standard CV with a 10-15mm extended CV due to the suspension lift. I had a few reservations regarding that I'm only replacing one side and how that may effect steering and suspension and the balance of the car. They've assured me it will all be fine and just get the other side replaced with an extended CV when it goes. Driving the car home I've noticed it needs a wheel alignment but otherwise everything is feeling/handling pretty good.

I just wanted to run this by you guys who have more experience with these things. Is it safe or should I go and have the other side replaced also?

Cheers for any advice,

Hendo

Yep, broke the driver's side.

Got them supplied and fitted by AADI also known as A & F Driveshaft Repairs at Coorparoo in Brisbane. They import them.

Here's the website if you're interested Dan. They may be GS-P but I'm not really sure, that was what was on all the boxes there.

Not sure on parts. Supply and fit standard was $330 and extended $420. Not sure if that price is good or bad...

I need to catch up with you forum guys for a wheel some time.

I work a rotating roster so a bit picky with weekends but we'll have to tee it up.

Quick update...

Took the lux in for a wheel alignment earlier in the week with the rookie aligner refusing to touch it as he reckons it was all too far out of spec and beyond his skill level. He recommended I come back in when their head mechanic/aligner was in.

So took it back this morning with the aligner initially recommending I get the other CV done before he looked at. He had a look at it anyway and it took him a while but he managed to get it all adjusted back within spec so happy days. :ugeek:

If you need a custom wheel alignment on the southside of brissie go to Hammond Tyres and More at Capalaba. They are jeep guys but don't let that stop you! I get them to max out my caster etc and they never say can't or why or give me any dramas.

Why extended CV's?

Postby shamat on Mon, 30 May 2016 3:03 +0000

Hi all,

I managed to absolutely smash a CV on the weekend and am on the hunt for a replacement set.
Everyone I have spoken to has advised I should get extended CV's as I have 3" lift.

I kind of get why, but struggle with understanding how it makes a real difference. In fact I think there is a possibility of them binding up as when sitting level they would be trying to push the wheel out further...

Can anyone help me understand what benefit an extended CV provides and why I should put them in?

Thanks heaps
