HELP NEEDED - leaking CV/diff housing area?

Postby MatthewS on Wed, 05 Dec 2012 12:07 +0000

Hey guys, recently discovered my front driveline has been leaking when I went to clean my car yesterday. I remember hearing a cracking sound when engaging 4wd from 2wd on the beach a few days ago, so maybe that might of been where it happened but I also went 4wd at glasshouse on the weekend so might of been that even. Not too sure, but it hasn't been leaking for any longer than 5 days.

It doesnt leak a great deal when stopped, over an entire night it will only leave a small patch of oil, smells like gear oil.

But as you can see in the photos, when moving it must be letting out more because the underbody has a layer of oil on it.

Im not to sure whats happened, so asking for some advice on whats needed to be fixed... either is it a mechanic job or can I have a go at home with a few mates.

Here's some photos... thanks guys. (the red line is where it is leaking from)

I'd say its just the driveshaft seal. If you know how to change a CV you can DIY. Just pull the shaft and change the seal. Its pretty common for them to get dirt in there and start leaking.

Dono about the crack sound but it looks like its just the seal. Easy job to replace I did mine the other day. Hopefully someone can help you more with the sound you heard.

Cheers,

Chris

Thanks guys, my mate also said it was more than likely just a seal and the on of cracking sound was something else that might not of even been related to this... I just vaguely remember something and thought it might of been what caused this...

I would love to take the cv out myself and learn how to do it, so might try and fix it myself.

Thanks for the input so far!

I got mine from toyota. Cant remember how much it was. If you get friendly with them they will give you trade price.

There is a how to guide on here somewhere on how to change a CV. Use that guide and you wont have a drama. I use a tyre lever to get the inner joint out of the diff. Easier than trying to hit a chisel or screwdriver with a hammer under the car.

Cheers,

Chris.

try searching under front axle seal. Dont ask for a diff seal like my first mistake

I did mine 2 months ago not much at all in it just make sure the c clip is on the bottom when you push the cv back in the housing ;)

Hi mathew

I agree with all mentioned so far BUT there is probably an oil issue as well. You have no doubt lost some and will loose more when you drop the cv, So make sure you stock up before you start. The oil from memory is synthetic or something like that. Toyota will have it, or any car joint can look it up for you with the amount. The reason I mention it is because it sucks to get it in. If you can get a pump even better.

Good luck. Joe

This is the oil seal on either side of the differential where the driveshaft pushes through into the diff center.

Toyota have just released an upgraded seal with an extra long rib length to prevent mud and dirt/sand from getting in better.

The new part numbers for this are -

LHF Differential Oil Seal
Previous Part Number - 90311-T0015
New "Upgraded" Part Number -90311T0037

RHF Differential Oil Seal
Previous Part Number - 90311-T0016
New "Upgraded" Part Number - 90311T0035

I fitted the upgraded driveshaft seals when I got my regera done recently. I beleive its a no brainer if your gonna be taking the shafts out anyway.

Thanks heaps everyone!

Bought the seal through Toyota on friday, took the CV out and installed the new seal on saturday with the help of a mate... All went well. No more leaking!

Good too know how to do it in the garage, hopefully if out in the bush if a CV breaks I will be able to fix it with a little more confidence now after doing this.

Cheers!

Hey guys I just discovered the drivers side of the front diff is leaking the slightest bit of oil (maybe 20ml) on the bottom of where the cv connects to the diff, is this something to worry about?

Did my passenger side one on the weekend and used a 300mm pry bar with a 45 deg bend on the end, came out easy.

Will the new seal reduce the play as the passenger side has about 3-5mm play(leaking side) where S the drivers side has a bout 1mm. I slid into a big rut on that side over the weekend and nearly put the Lux on its side. Worried I've done more than a seal??
