Extending Diff Breathers

G'day All,

Got to take the New 08 D4D SR5 DC for a highway run today - Miles ahead of the last lux, cant believe how nice, cumffy and easy to drive it is!!!

Anyway back to the topic, what have poeple been using to extend the diff breathers? On the last one I just popped the top of the toyota breather, added some clear water hose, a hose clamp and ran them to under the bonnet near the brake booster with an intrument air filter on the end.
Can you still pop the top off the toyota diff breather and do the same? or do you need to get a new nipple and screw it in inplace of the toyota breathers?

I got a brass plumbing fitting (male - hex - male)from bunnings that fit the thread. Just had to grind off the thread on the other end to get a good seal on the extended hose.
Cost about $2.60

Take the toyota one down to the auto shop and they will give you the correct fitting with no grinding required.

Thanks Doug,

Gives me one more excuse to take the new Ducati for a ride - it's getting harder to choose which new toy to take.

Hi Dave,

I've been out and about most of easter but keep forgetting to take the camera. Heading up to Innisfail tomorrow so hope to get some on the way.

Cheers Jason

There's an article by Bryan Webber titled 'Raised Differential Breathers Pre 05 Hilux' in the Technical section.

Works for post '05 also.

Hey doug, tried 3 auto shops myself but to no avail, thats when bunnings came to the rescue. But yeah it sure would have been easier with a proper fitting.

Yes, you can just pop the top off the existing breathers, don't worry about buying more fittings, I posted photos on here in one of the threads about a year ago when I did it.
I don't think the old photos survived the new server though so they are probably not on here any more.

I was digging threw all my spares for the old Lux and found 3/8BSP brass fittings which I think where extra's I bought for extending the diff breathers back 3 years ago and didn't use. I orginally got these fittings from Enzed.
If these fit I'll get Dave to add the size fittings and photo's to the Tech section for future.

Extending Diff Breathers

I had a look under my car today in preparation to do this mod. I have a question, but bear with me for a moment.

Surprisingly as Jason said, the thread is BSP imperial not metric. A standard 3/8" male thread air hose with a 1/4"barb fititng in the rear diff would be ideal. The front breather is fairly high already (under my ARB dual Battery tray) but it would be worth extending. You don't need any fittings, just a a hose clamp as the existing hose just clamps onto a pipe at the bottom.

When I took out the rear breather, I heard a hiss of air entering the diff. Checked the valve and it is one way. lets air out, but not in. Quite a vacuum must build up in the diff. I am planning to run the breather up behind the tail light and bought a couple of $3.00 fuel filters from Super Cheap. No sense running a hose back to the front of the car as the back is probably higher than the firewall. My Suzi did this from the factory.

So here is the question:
When I extend the rear breather, should I replace the one way valve on the end of the hose or let it breathe normally?

Let it breath ... if your using a filter, that will be enough.. The problem with one way type breathers is that when you hit cool water and your diff is hot, the air inside the diff contracts.. if it cannot breath (through the breather) it wil try and suck air in from elsewhere.. usually through the pinion seal, and you end up with water in your diff anyway... Standard breathers are not worth the metal they are made from... Cheers TOMUCH
