What set-up does the Prado 120 have ?

Does anyone know if it could be transfered to the Hilux like the front set-up ?

mkwell wrote:Just received an aftermarket rear disc brake conversion kit from Thailand. Looks a quality product. See http://www.runstopbj.com/rear_brakekit.htm. It is a 320mm disc for my 16" steel rims. At the same time purchased the upgrade to the front disc's which are upsized to to a 330mm vented and slotted rotor with ceramic pads. Hope to be fitting the disc conversions next week. Happy to let you know how they perform if you country lads are interested.

Sounds good mate.. post up some pics of what the kit contains too..

Should bolt straight on......might need a bit of fab work regarding the brake lines, but I reckon if yiou can get the bits from a wrecker cheap it would be worth pursuing.

Hey guys, been thinking more and more about doing this conversion.
Has anyone actually done it yet?
Where did you get your kit from and how much was it all up?
Are you pleased with the results?
Anything you would do differently next time?

Rear Disc Brake Conversion

Postby Toylux4 on Sat, 02 Jul 2011 6:12 +0000

I have made an fitted a rear disc to my LN106.

I used the same Disc's and Calipers as the front.

New DBA rotors (DBA-151) from Super cheap on special for $120and also came with a free set of pads.

The Calipers I got off a local wrecker for $50 for the pair.

I removed the Axle and machined the back of wheel Mounting surface and fitted the disc to the axle using front wheel studs ( off eBay $14 per side) and an 8mm spacer on the outside to make the wheel mounting surface the same width as the drum.

I made my own brackets out of 10mm plate which bolt to 3 of the 4 Axle retaining bolts using the standard hardware.

I upgrade to an 80 series master cylinder, 1" bore compaired to the Hilux's 7/8" cost about $70 off eBay.

I also purchased a proportioning an residual valve from Locktup4x4, it stops the knock off of the rear calipers, because the rear wheel bearing is only a single row ball bearing you would be surprised how much sideways float the axle has especially when driving on winding roads ( like most of the roads in Tassie ) the constant sideways movement push's the pads away from the disc, so when you push the brake pedal it will sometimes go almost straight to the floor and you have to pump the pedal to get the right feel. The residual valve fix's this problem. You also need the proportioning valve to stop the rear brakes from Locking up by not shopping as much brake fluid to the rear calipers. I set the proportion valve to about 30%

I also had to purchase some flexible brake lines to connect the calipers. Cost $150 for pair as I opted for braided lines as I had upgraded the rest of my flexible lines to braided ones.

I fitted the kit one Saturday afternoon at work so I could use the Lathe to machine the axles, the hole thing took about 6 hours from start to finish and was the best mod I had done.

Things I would change would be to fit a full floating rear kit from Front Range Offroad Fabrication
http://frontrangeoffroadfab.com/nfoscom ... 0b0e18eae8

would stop the brake knock off for good and the wheel bearings should last longer, I have 35's on 15x10's and I am lucky if the rear wheel bearings last 12 months.

Thank you for the detailed reply mate. I probably wont be making anything up myself as i would like to get it engineered and I just dont have the tools/machines to do it, but i envy your fabrication skills :D

Anyone else gone through with this? im very sick of the drums and having to adjust them all the time. I wonder If I could start by just getting a bigger master cylinder and see how that goes? Maybe one of an 80 series like toylux has done.

I don't think the master cylinder will provide any benefits. The main reason you upgrade it with the rear disc conversion is to make it a fast fill cylinder able to cope with the extra fluid displacement caused by the calliper pistons.

Well done on your conversion Toylux. The vehicle looks awesome.

Rear Disc Brake Conversion

Postby Toylux4 on Sat, 02 Jul 2011 8:45 +0000

Thanks Ultimate

Your right I changed the Master Cylinder because discs require more fluid to be moved compared to drums and the 80 series on has bigger bore so it moves more fluid and it is made to work with front and rear discs

Well since I've been named :)
Ive have done it, used the runstop kit from outback accessories.
I ran into major major head f$@#&% apparently my diff is somewhat different to other hiluxs
I am yet to confirm this as I havn't checked other hilux diffs but I think you could only check by taking off the brake drum
I ended up having to get the axles machined down from 92 dia to 90 dia
had a spacer plate and other shims made up to make it fit but I still think there are some problems with it and i dont think its the mounting point of view more of the manufacture

So with the headache of it all, would you do it again and has it been beneficial to the braking?

If I knew the apparent different diff problem I was going to have, no way in hell I have a friend that works for Veem (driveshaft company) so it made it all easier but definately not.
I bought the car and the drums were metal on metal so I didnt really have time to make to much of a choice so rushed into the conversion off it.

No instructions either well there was a little bit but it was in Thai

as for benefifical braking I cant really tell as my brakes were stuffed when I bought the car
I do worry a little bit in the wet I have a feeling that the rear brakes lock up a little
