Hi all,

I called Toyota to enquier about prices on new diff ratios, to my shock they wanted $2455.00 for front and rear ratios parts onlyv :o
Think I will be seeking used from the wreckers for 3.727 ratios.

I then made a call to a diff specialist who says 4.1 thick cut ratios for the hilux carrier are available but needs to double check after I kept questioning him. Will let you all know how I go next week. Have a feeling I'm going to be disappointed but will keep my fingers crossed ;)

No one makes a thick cut 4.1, Id love to be proven wrong thou. Would be great.

Genuine diff ratios are about 800 bux per side so around 1600 for both, that quote he gave you he's either ripping you or adding something else on top.

3.7's arent worth changing if goin from 3.5's....not worth the effort IMO.....go the 3.9's and get atleast some benefit from it.

Hey max,

Are the 3.9 available as thick cuts? I'm wanting to keep my front diff locker.

the only thick cut gears available are the 4.5's.....everything else is standard size.

3.9 requires the prado120 locker or carrier.

Hey rod, been lurking around lol Not as much as usual, too much work... lots of new parts for the lux in the shed, just need the time to fit them

Thats good to know that i can do that, so keep an eye out people there might be a front locker on here forsale soon, might be easier instead of just getting the part to get the whole prado locker, but will see how much $ arb want for the part only.
If i replace the whole locker i can have the 3.9 or 4.1 not sure which yet on the bench then just swap them over. save a bit on labor.
I thought re gearing was going to be a fn pain but looks like its going to be easy....
Im not stuck..... Im thinking

J&L wrote:I run the 4.55 thick cut with the 121 ARB locker up front. A very tight fit but it works. For the 32" tyres (265x75x16) I run at 2850 rpm @100km/h (small variations as it depends on tyres and wear). The main advantage is even lower ratio than standard which save a clutch and I have torque for crawling at idle speed with 32".
The yoke stay standard up front as the splines of the pinion is the same but the rear needs a different yoke as it has less splines.
Johan

Is this 4th gear that's 2850 rpm or is it that in 5th gear?
Also what's your top speed in low range at 3000rpm?
I know there are preset tables/charts but I don't trust them as utes differ.

5th gear . . . but that was for the 29" My mistake. I have to recheck for the 32" This makes it a bit lower RPM and shows I can go to 33" without loosing too much. I have to do a test for low gear as I have the 29" tyres on for city driving. I think around 50 but that's to be verified

It will fit the hilux if you use either the prado carrier or a prado120 air locker as explained in this bible.

4.1's will be a good move for you.

How many k's are on it mate??

Mine had 56 thou on it (the prado diff that is) and it cost me 800 for the whole lot so 700 sounds like a great price

Unknown kms at the moment. I have a diff repairer quoting me at the moment on 4.1s and front+rear diff lockers, will have to sell my old diff locker which has only done 5 weeks of time in the lux and no more than 4 hours of play
Hopfully I can get something for to help cover my 4.1 ratio bill :?
If only there were some 4.3 thick cuts as the 4.56 would have been awesome off road but living in W.A. I can't avoid not driving long distances so will have to settle fo the 4.1.

Hi all,

My lux is on a hoist with the diffs open, the diff center doing them are having trouble locating 4.1 ratios as his plan A, B and C have failed (won't go it to detail about his plans and why they failed, to put it short he has been very very unlucky) :o
He is waiting on word from the US but would prefer so from AUS as I have trips planed from next Friday and the next following weekends. NO WAY I WON'T TO MISS OUT, NOW F ING WAY

Please help out with contacts cheers. :?

You won't get the front diff ratios in 4.1 or 4.3 out of the US as nobody makes them but you can get 3.9, 4.1 and 4.3 rears from me. But not by the time you want to play. Seeing you are in WA, check with Chris at Locktup4x4, he might have stock.

Grab it and if you have the time, pull it down, grab the bearing numbers and you should be able to get replacement ones (I paid $120 for rear bearings). I'd probably leave the pinion bearing alone as I think you will need to get a crush tube from Toyota if you pull it out.

You can order the front Prado 120's in 4.1:1 through the dealership and they will order them from japan.

Part Number - 4120180196

you'd be looking at around $900 or thereabouts.

The only 4.1's from the USA would be the factory gears which are the very same as the one I quoted you above. If you dont mind the extra expense and the 4 week wait for parts from japan then go for it. Otherwise the wrecker option as Rod mentioned is the way, thou you dont know the history of the parts.
