Im waiting for a confirmation email Quinny from LockdUp's differential specialist.

Personally, I dont think the front is compatible, but they say it is so Im waiting on some more info from them.

The other option you have Quinny is to source diff centers from a 2.7 litre 3KZ Prado 120.....there werent many sold but they run 4.5:1 diff ratios.

You are better off going the 4.1 : 1 ratio diff gear not the 3.9's...

If fitting a front locker with 4.1 gears you will need the Prado locker - RD121

hope that helps.

Thanx mmaxx. Read it all, still confused what the final result for best suited gearing is for the manual d4d running 32's? Early on it's the 4.1 and changes to the 3.9. Rods table was wrong? Dont mean to b a nuisance, just wana b sure befor spending lots of coin. Feel free to delete my posts wen answered. And the prado arb locker part no?? Rd121 or rd111?? Which is which??

With 32's the 3.9 Prado gears are the STD best suit to return the gearing to stock.

That is precisely what I have fitted and it is a big improvement over the STD gears when.

Thanx heaps McSumWay. I'm hoping to get this done soon so 3.9 prados up front and standard hilux 3.9s in rear sounds good

What's the model number of the prado 120 with a ratio of 3.9's? You purchased them brand new didn't you Warren. I'm hoping to get them from a wrecker

I believe the 3.9 gears were used in the 120 series v6 manuals and maybe the diesel manuals.

This thread contains the Toyota part numbers.

Heres an update from Chris from LockdUp 4x4.....it was as I suspected initially thou hoped it wouldnt.....

Hi Max,
Lucky I confirmed this with a different supplier. 100 Series is an 8" reverse cut ring gear, but it is not a clamshell style diff. So the info I was given in regards to the 100 series lockers is incorrect.

A 4.56:1 ratio is available for the 05+ Hilux front, however.

Cheers

Chris

The wrecker should know the ratios as there are codes which tell him. Just look for a 8" 3.9:1 prado diff. If you look on my buildup (eg RodW's buildup), you will find some photos that let you identify the front diff from the 7.5" from the earlier model. The back is not a drama as it goes back to the previous model. I might add that the price the wreckers want for them, the genuine part is not such a silly idea...

Just got a quote on these from the local steelers. $950 each for front and rear cw + p The guy did tell me though that the same configuration can also be found on a Hiace. Is anyone able to confirm this?

Cheers,

Billy

I think that is probably the case but Max would know for certain. The rear diffs are fairly standard across years and models but it won't give you the front diff. Does not really matter if he is matching a quoted part number though.

the price sounds about right. It was about $800 + GST so it is not far out.

Yeah but the Hiace is only 2wd.. so you're still chasing a front anyway..

Has the latest spec SR5 been regeared due to the 17 inch wheels?

No they have gone to a lower profile tyre so the overall tyre size is the same.

These vehicles are South Sfrican build I believe and the rear diff is slightly different - they use a dana spicer shim adjust compared to the other nut adjust models so the rear lockers are different. (ARB RD 133)

Okie Dokie, so i have read the whole bible and just after some confirmation before splashing the cash on the wrong stuff. I have an 07 diesel manual and am currently running 31's but will be changing to 33's very soon. Ill also be buying arb air lockers (front and rear) and want to re gear at the same time. Sooooooo.......

Firstly ill need 4.1's to bring back stock gearing.
Secondly, as im getting 4.1's ill need the prado front locker (RD111)
and the rear is (RD132)
Thirdly, If I buy genuine toyota 4.1 diff gear sets ill need part numbers (4120180196) for the front
and (4120180179) for the rear.
Fouthly, If I want to buy second hand gears ill need to talk to a wrecker about getting the diffs out of a 120 series prado (not sure the year) with a 1Kz Turbo diesel 5 speed manual or the 4 speed auto ONLY as they had the 4.1's standard.

Do I have everything roughly in order??
Any advice is greatly appreciated :D

Cheers, Josh

Josh, sounds like you have it pretty right. You'll probably also have to factor in bearing kits as it is hard to remove bearings intact for reuse. For the record, the rear gear set from Toyota are $1,020 each. Ouch!

VMN is currently experimenting with an aftermarket good quality US made gear set for the rear. It should work out at about $470 for the crown wheel and pinion plus $345 for the fitting kit which includes all seals, bearings, gaskets and shims. Apparently they have a different spline count on the pinion but the fitting kit includes a replacement flange with a spline to suit the crown wheel.

There is no solution for the front gear set, so you would need to get that from Toyota but it would save you $550!

The great advantage of this gear set is that it uses a hard spacer and shims v's the factory crush tube to set tolerances so when set up correctly, there is no flex between the crown wheel and pinion so will be much harder to break the rear gears.

I'll keep everybody posted on this project, but feel free to PM me for more info
