I thought it had more todo with the drums ability to handle a higher load with the handbrake on than a rear end disk? I could be wrong, but dont most rear disk brake cars have a small drum brak as part of the hand brake assembly???

Jogal,
I think all aussie hiluxes come from Thailand. Also, not all Japanese brand utes come from Thailand, the D40 Navara is made in Spain and has a Renault diesel in it. I suspect the reasons for putting drums on the rear of so many Japanese brand utes is a combination of many of the reasons discussed above. Perhaps someone should contact the engineering departments of the main players and ask them why. :?: :?:

I know that the 75 series cruisers have that set up Quinny. 4 wheel disc brake with a small drum that is connected to the handbrake.

Any more luck on the disc brake conversion info? Something needs to be done about them. My driveway has an incline and the handbrake takes 12 clicks to engage. Thats one area that has let me down on the lux. Apparently to put discs on the rear the master cylinder needs to be changed to get the extra pressure to the rear

Luke

Your handbrake ideally should be fully engaged at 7 clicks....not 12....I'd go get it adjusted.

Ive adjusted it at the drums a couple of times. Apparently they're self adjusting when they wear but Ive never seen that happen. Is there any other places it can be adjusted? Yet to get under the ute and have a decent look. Bit strange considering i get under there to grease up the uni's after every beach run lol

Im not 100% sure, if you apply the brakes (Foot?) hard in reverse a couple of times they adjust themselves.

After a bit of hard 4wheeling where a reverse and another go at a hill a couple of times has been happening the hand brake is allways adjusted.

I thought it was something wrong, then read here thats how the rear shoes are adjusted.

i believe the transport department,
would never assume any commerical vechiel going over 120-130. how many 6-8 wheelers do you see going 130????,
they put it as a tax benfit issue. and no goverment would give any tax benfits for fitting the best things.
like a full coilover suspensions set all round, and big 4pots with big rotors. haha i would imagen, if the goverment gave insentives for doing that, we all woudnt be here.

MONSTERHILUX, you haven't seen the truck drivers drive there rigs here in Oz by your ststement, we are lucky to see a 18 wheeler doing under 130k on the highways
But I agree the hilux should have rear disc and coil over springs and a live front diff and 4.1 to 1 diff ratio but aussie beggers can't be choosers in the world economy

Up here in the Territory, you haven't seen a truck until you've seen a road train of 4+ trailers chugging along the hwy. Those things are lucky to churn out 90 clicks at the most. In the old Unimog, you'd get a bit more than that out of the old girl by standing on the hand throttle lmao!

Back on topic though, I'm thinking of changing to 4 wheel disks when I finally get my lux . . . which can't come soon enough.

a good mate of mine makes brake kits for the rear of older generation luxies, between the two of us were gonna have a go at making up a rear disk bracket kit for our model, but be warned the wheels they turn slowly especially as we may be starting a sas on his 99 model soon so see how we go.....

I had posted this on another thread.
I fitted a rear disc brake set from TJM Seaford recently, purchased over a year ago.Cost then $1200.
Everything fits as it should except two of the hoses are too short if calipers are fitted as marked,F and R.
I reversed the position of the calipers and all OK.(This is as clear as mud but becomes obvious when fitting up).
You do need a good press and equipment to remove/ replace bearings and seals.I think their fitting cost was $300 which would be money well spent if you are not mechanical.
I spent half a day just making the bearing puller after the one Toyota lent me would not fit over ABS.
I replaced axle seals , bearings and the 4 bearing retainer rings. I never pull an axle bearing off without replacing with a new one.
Reason for fitting was a leaky oil seal on LHS axle. Kit was in stock and new brake linings cost $$$$.
Overall I am very happy with the conversion, certainly feels to brake better.

Dermie

These guys make a rear disc conversion kit for the Hilux. They seem to be very thorough and appear to be able to produce engineering data to keep your engineer happy.

I did get a price. From, memory around $1100-$1200.

Matty (10k/Monster Rides) is out of the country at the moment. but speaking to him about his trips to Thailand looking at 4WD shops, the Runstops were not well regarded over there. Don't know the details.

Found the quote

Yep we now do a 330 x 28 twin piston front upgrade for current shape 2004 onwards Hilux 2WD. This needs minimum 17 inch wheels and the guys who have bought them say they work great.

It also turned out that the standard master cylinder works fine too so good news all around.

Instructions are attached and kits sells for $1300 all up with slotted rotors and braided hoses, all easy to fit bolt on.

We also have a rear conversion for drums to discs at $1400 slotted rotors if required.

No, doesn't it say $1400 for the rear drum to disc conversion?
