DPF recall

Postby Tourboy on Wed, 08 Feb 2017 1:20 +0000

On the Fortuner forum there is talk of a possible recall regarding the DPF's on the Fortuner, Hilux and Prado's. Has anyone got confirmation of this. I'm still waiting for a response from Toyota.

unless its a safety issue they wont issue a recall as such , more likely a field service campaign ( like the fuel filter assembly and transmission software ) . if customer complains they replace said part , if no complaint they do nothing.
so the more complaints the better :D

i hope the damn things get ripped out personally

when new i was getting "replace fuel filter" messages on the dash. took it in and they said that the entire fuel filter housing was being replaced under a campaign. after the parts came in it was only a 20min job to replace

I had a service done yesterday. Mentioned the excessive fuel consumption (in my opinion) as I rarely get below 12.5L/100k even though I drive like a grandma, asked if the DPF was the issue. A Toyota ECU update was installed to reprogram the DPF operation. A forced burn was done to clear it out but no DPF replacement.

Auto update was also done ... just pulling out of the driveway from the dealership I immediately felt the difference. No more slush !

Case by case basis if your experiencing white soot coming out of your exhaust and/or DTC codes showing up or not.

there is an ECU engine calibration update I heard for those affected, and DPF replacement if required.

Im wondering if alot of these DPF issues are related to people not drivihng the vehicles properly in the first place.....short trips and stoip go traffic will cause dpf to build up and force a burn when the system states it requires it.

Hang on there ... "properly" is a bit rich ... the vehicle design should accommodate the full spectrum of driving conditions including 100% urban driving cause there are some that will use it as such. There are markets around the world where highway driving will be an extreme rarity.

"Properly" in the sense of how Toyota would ideally like the vehicle to be driven given the pdf system fitted to it.

yes, agreed, there will be different driving requirements among hilux customers all over the world....and yes the vehicles should accomadate this. BUT....and a big BUT.......

Not all of Hilux's markets around the world require it to meet Euro5 emission compliance, which is why the DPF is fitted to the Australia bound hilux's.

In Asia, South Africa, Mid east markets...theres no Euro5 compliance requirement.....they either run without DPF 2,8D's or the older 1KD 3 litre diesels......

guess time will tell how well these dpf system hold up over time.....guess we are starting to see the first cracks now with this white smoke issue.

ive noticed mine never does a burn while towing our 1500kg van , yet will do burns every 200klm on a long country run with no load.
so i could see how , if you did a long touring run towing a van , how the DPF will clog up really quickly.

Towing puts a large load on the engine causing higher exhaust gas temperatures. This is actually a good thing as the DPF will heat up naturally by the higher EGT causing a passive regeneration of the soot without the need for additional diesel to be injected into the exhaust. Highway driving does not necessarily produce enough heat to burn off the soot naturally which is why some people will notice the vehicle doing an active regeneration even after long trips.

i do agree Adam , but towing would also load up the DPF with more soot , therefore needing more active regens to keep it clean.
while towing i never notice the DPF temp climb to over 500 , yet a proper burn is 600-720deg

Just got off the phone with the dealer, They are going to re flash the ECU and not replace the DPF. I said that others are reporting an increase in consumption after this and he said it shouldn't cause that. I also mentioned that the auto is relearning the original programming and is flaring again between changes and he replied it will do that so we will re flash that too next service. He knew nothing of a permanent fix and I assume that the ECU re flash will also revert over a period of time.
