GPS accuracy

Postby DWWood on Fri, 09 Dec 2016 3:44 +0000

Hi guys, about to order an SR5 and having never had a car with built-in GPS I was wondering what the actual GPS software was like? Is it accurate? Easy to read? Does it have traffic updates? What are your pros and cons.

I have used Google maps from my phone for the last 5 or so years so I'm hoping I can just leave the phone on the console and not have to have something stuck to my windscreen.

Cheers. DW.

I find it works okay. You do get traffic updates and alternative routes as long as you have entered a destination. One good thing I like is the Toyota Link app. It allows you to look up a destination on your phone and send it to the car. When you get in the car the touchscreen will inform you of a destination available. It is very easy to enter a destination on the screen though. Probably the only downfall is that you don't get map updates and they can be outdated when you pickup the car. There is also a Travel Time app which allows you to enter some common destinations and will inform you of any traffic issues before you leave. Hope this helps.

Hi DWWood. Just to give you a different perspective as has been pointed out above when you get the vehicle the SD card with the map data on it can already be 12 months old & you have to purchase a new SD card to get the latest updates & from what I have seen you will be lucky to get another one may be two years apart & the biggest killer of the Toyota sat nav is they want approximately $350.00 from spare parts for a new SD card. ( They are bloody joking  )
I purchased a Garmin screen mounted 3D sat nav for $350.00 it leaves the Toyota unit for dead, I get lifetime maps at least four per year & software updates all for FREE for LIFE also has live FM traffic updates included all free plus a host of other great features. Toyota would be better off if they provided a sat nav that we could put in our own SD card with what ever system individual drivers use, do not hold your breath that will not happen any time soon.
Cheers :)

Hmm, typical of car companies. Reckon they make more money from after sales than the actual sale of the car.

When you say Garmin 'screen mounted' is that like a replacement head unit?

Appreciate the heads up, think I might be best to give it a try at least.
