How do the V6s go in the new body??

Postby 2468bidw on Fri, 29 Jul 2016 6:33 +0000

G'day guys, with the diesels getting most of the attention what about the old V6? Anyone got news on the V6 with the new auto?

Have a 2012 D4D but getting tired of the diesel maintenance & all the DPF fun (on this & some other brands in my family)

Cheers, John

Hello John

A member called Philby just got one and he loves it so hopfully he will chime in and help you out. He's so happy with the 1GR-FE V6 he kept his old Hilux that he personally installed a TRD Supercharger and engineered his own 6 Speed manual into it.

Really good engine the 1GR-FE and they are starting to see 800,000 klm with little or no problems.

The only criticism I would have would be directed at Toyota Australia for not putting in the newer Dual VVti V6 or the 3.5lt Atkinson Cycle V6 that the USA Tacoma is getting. Very poor form Toyota Australia!
They should have at least updated to a newer exhaust header found here viewtopic.php?f=81&t=23730

Cheers

I'd be pointing the finger at Toyota in Thailand as that is where ours are assembled. The US stuff is assembled there. Are the V6 and auto components still out of the Landcruiser plant in Japan? Or are they now Thai made? I wondered about the A750F autos too once they started to put them behind the D4D if those were then Thai made as well. I know in my 2011 both the engine and auto are ex Japan.

HK, not sure how the factory in Thailand affects the design from Japan. The EGR isn't a build quality issue, nor injector issues from bad fuel.

I was talking about Toyota not fitting the good Tacoma engine or the dual VVTi engine to Thai built vehicles, it probably is not Toyota Australia's call, it is Toyota in Thailand (or Japan as you state). The Tacoma's are built in the USA.

If they had a decent upgraded V6 or V8 engine in the Hilux, I would have gone that way. But as good as they may be for a V6, they are still a thirsty beast once you add weight and bigger tyres etc to it. Its getting old now.

I look at it this way, if I was to buy a Holden ute there is no way in hell i'd buy an SV6 over an LS3 powered SS or SSV despite the $10-$15k price difference. I feel the same way about Hiluxes, better engine, better to drive and a bit more fuel (and often cheaper fuel too, at the moment in Newcastle diesel is $1.18, E10 is $1.03 which almost negates the fuel saving with the diesel around town). And in the Toyota you don't pay more for the better and from my eyes more reliable engine! Just my thoughts anyway. If I was doing 50,000kM a year I might think differently. I agree with Hilux Max too, i'd sell mine tomorrow if a decent petrol V8 example was available, like an LS3 in a Colorado. Or the Lexus LX570 V8 in a Hilux sized vehicle. I don't want a Tundra or F250 sized vehicle, way too impractical for everyday use.

I dunno why they didn't use the Aurion V6 3.5l engine, it's a rocket
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

Isn't that engine built here? It is the same GR family engine anyway, just a smaller version (shorter stroke) but has dual VVTi I think. Same 2GR engine in Kluger and RX350. It has less power than the 1GR 4.0L dual VVTi but more than a standard 1GR as we got in the Hilux. A Hilux 1GR with decent exhaust and a XEDE and especially with Gulfstream's TRD CAI would easily outdo one of these. I have a 2011 Lexus RX350 and it is nowhere near as nippy as my 2011 SR5 V6 (yet to get a CAI). It's torque rating is significantly lower than a stock Hilux 1GR anyway and its peak torque happens 1000rpm later than the 1GR so probably not as well suited as the 1GR to a Hilux.
