Exhaust Modifications

Postby NAT305 on Mon, 10 Oct 2016 6:58 +0000

Hi guys,

I went camping over the weekend to Double Island in my 2.8L SR duel cab auto and as you could imagine everyone ogles over every car that drives past whether it be how bright their spotlights are or how lifted it is or how tough it sounds ect... Pretty much all of the toughest rigs that went past had a loud exhaust and loud turbo whine.

Has anyone done any exhaust modifications to achieve a tough sounding rig to the new hilux?

While we were up there we unbolted the muffler off my mates Beaudesert 2.75inch exhaust (he has an SR5) to see what would happen. (We couldn't unbolt my stock exhaust because of the locknuts, we needed a rattle gun which we didn't have up there) it didn't change a thing it sounded pretty much the same. We think it could be because of the DPF but not sure, any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Nathan.

I wouldn't go removing any part of your exhaust just yet Nat, take the DPF out puts you in violation of emission laws in Australia.

At the moment I'm not aware of any third party company have a full 3" exhaust for the new Hilux even though we're getting close to 12 months since their release. There is a company doing and after market exhaust but only from the DPF back. Do a search because that was a post some weeks ago on the subject.

Personally I'm waiting on Taipan XP 3" system that should be available early next year (13 months in R and D
mostly because of the DPF)

Hi Richard,

I'm not a mechanic and have little knowledge on how a DPF system actually works and other than being in violation of emission laws I'm not sure what the repercussions of removing it would be to the performance of the ute so I have no intentions of doing anynlthing without some expert advice of course.

I hope that they bring something out soon, Iv seen heaps of Rangers getting around with aftermarket exhausts which sounds fantastic.

Some companies have DPF deletes out. you fit it at your own risk due to emissions laws.

I wonder....because of the DPF (which is light an extra muffler fitted), couldnt we fit a hot dog muffler or some other sort of muffler in the system to give it some extra bark? as opposed to removing the mufflers with a straight pipe like we used to on the N70's?

Surely adding a muffler "to make noise" could be an option?

Apart from illegality, you need to delete the dpf in the ecu so not that easy to just remove the filter, you must retune the map to delete it digitally. :geek:
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

If you're purely after more noise, HKS and Turbosmart do a diesel compatible blow off valve.
Then you can mix it up with the ricer brigade. Borrrrrrrr, PSHHHH!!..
It'l be equally worthless as a fat exhaust on an unmodified motor, but far cheaper.

Yep No doubt it will do all they claim.------ Toyota Corporation will just love it, all the money they will save by NOT having to give any warranties on engine & drive train on all those Hilux vehicles that have a non standard exhaust & modifications. If your are lucky you might still get warranty on the door hinges!!! May be wait till your warranty is expired or better still get into a V8 Landcruiser. CHEERS.

Even better still, buy a 4.6L V8 Landcruiser or 5.7L Lexus 'cruiser with an aftermarket exhaust, then you have real power, the right sound and you can laugh at all the broken down common rails!

In the interests of full disclosure, thats exactly what I did with my previous 70 series cab / chassis, sans chip.
Did it purely for the glorious whistling rumble. On a four banger? Sounds like controlled farting.

Ring Toyota Customer Care and they'll tell you go ahead and do any modifications you care to but entirely at your own risk. I really can't see a 3" exhaust causing any distress, can you?

And the coppers will put you off the road within days of fitting it.

Or a young second hand 5.6L Patrol if you swing that way. I've seriously looked at both to replace my 2011 V6 Hilux. The V6 Hilux is easily the best engine in any of the dual cabs but a 5.6/5.7L V8 would be nice. Only problem with the Lexus is pulling all the ugly stuff off and putting Landcruiser stuff on, like the sills.

  now THAT would be tinkering :D

Good to hear the V6 hilux is a good engine but yes a V8 would be good, although the Toyota V8 petrol is a bit of a letdown, better to have the V6. I dunno why they didn't use a V6 diesel in the Hilux :?

Patrol??? wash your mouth out1 ;)

The 4.6L Landcruiser V8 is a good one, same engine as the 5.7L but bigger internals. But the weight difference in the 200 series for the extra 600mm in engine capacity just isn't worth it, Toyota need the 5.7L version in the 200 series but they won't do it in Australia as Lexus want it exclusive.

V6 diesel in a Hilux, still wouldn't buy it as they'd only make it 3.0L like Nissan did and it'd be inferior to the petrol 4.0. If they made it 4.0L or bigger maybe.

The Patrol is near half the price for a used car in identical condition, and a whole 1L bigger that the 200 series, that is why it has to be considered!
