Headlights

Postby jcarter on Thu, 05 Mar 2009 12:09 +0000

Howdy, been recently mulling over replacing my headlight bulbs, and finally decided to do so.

I had no issues with the high beam's i though they wre great, but low beams seemed very dull.

Having alook around the shops, and remembe backto last time i replaced lights from Super cheap and how bad they wre i decided to look at the more well known brands.

During the search i came across a site in the UK, which seems a number of other people in another forum i was on have purchased from ok.

SO after looking between the Philips and the OSRAMS (when i took mine out the originals where OSRAMS btw), i decided on the Osram Night Breaker H4's.

Only ended up being $38 i think including postage, arrived in 5days if that.

Replace them sucessfully, and a real nice improvment.

They arent Blue tinged like alot of the other lights out there, they are More whiter.

On the highway in low beam, i had a car about 3 or more car lenghts infront of me, and my low beam lights where lighting up all the way to the rear of there car, and suffeciently to the sides aswell, they car infronts lights going maybee half of that distance in comparision.

When driving around town its easy to see how the streets are lit up much better, ive always had problems with the standard lights just being a wee bit too dull.

High beam, wow, The normal Hilux High beam was pretty good to start with, but the OSram Night Breakers realy did work well, Distance especialy side visibility was now much much further, Overall very impressed, and ended up being a Cheap upgrade, at around half the price of some of the others i saw instore.

jcarter,

I 'm using Osram Silverstar +50 H4 globes and they are good.

Looks like you are using the latest +90 H4 globes.

It's also cheap paying only AUD$38 for the pair of globes.

I find Osram globes cheaper than Philips though.
Cheers

Okay so what is the better bulb xenon or the OSRAMS, the xenon are cheaper but have the blue tinged light.... so what have others done? Pros and Cons, I do a fair bit of night driving on the highways not happy with the high beam, my Commodore is brillant compared to the hilux lights.

cool95,

Yes, the link you have on ebay is exactly the same product that jcarter is using.

I say forget about the other xenon bulb. It's a generic brand (not a reputable manufacturer), blue globes/bulbs will give you less light output over a white light.

If you really like better lights, go for the HID's but then again stick with a proven brand.

Yep cool95 they are the exact same ones.
9W6VX yep they are they newever version of the Osram +50's, When looking around it seemed the philips ones where less favourable, but without directly comparing them myself i couldnt say.

the OEM ones in the Hilux where OSRAM aswell in my case.

as 9W6VX Said the blue lights especialy the cheaper brands are bad, and generaly not as bright as stock OEM anyway.

HID would be my ideal lights, but in the meantime a cheap upgrade.

Hey guys i love being able to see at night and i love white headlights however in my research while looking into what lights to get i have found that HID kits are not legal anywhere in Australia as a after market addition. so European cars can have them as they come off the production line with them. and any bulbs you buy have to be less than 4000k bright. the best lights i have found are diamond vision i think they are made by Philips. i don't know how white they are in numbers but they are very white they arnt like hid lights that are just turning blue. however they are more expensive and don't last as long. however i have arctic white bulbs but i cant remember what brand.

However if you do put hid lights in buy them on ebay as they are about $250 cheaper and there will be a transformer that you will have to hide somewhere so if you get pulled over you stand some chance of getting away with it.

Cheers Sam

Bought the Osrams, before I fit what is the procedure with replacing the bulb, is it a twist fitting, or uses special clips etc. Do I have to remove the battery when fitting. Just want to get a heads up before I bust something....

nah mate its easy
Rules
1. DONT TOUCH THE GLASS OF THE BULB it will screw it up
2....... Refer to rule 1

Now that we have that out of the way we can be serious
behind your headlight you will fine a plug with 3 leads running to it pull it off the back of the bulb then from memory there will be a rubber grommet protecting the back of the bulb remove that carefully as you will need it. then you will find a piece of wire that is the clip that holds the bulb in you will be able to see how to un clip it (not hard) then the bulb will almost fall out into your hands. then put the new bulb in and your sweet.

Any probs let me know cheers Sam
