Mate, there are basicly two types of antennas, ground plane and ground plane independant. the first requires a large metal surface beneath it to radiate the transmission signal out, IE the center of your roof. As this is not practicable the other independant type is used. it does not require a graound plane to help withthe signal and can transmitt mounted on a bar. I am pretty sure (dont quote me) that the siganl radiates from the length of the antenna. I remember years ago have to have an antenna SWRd in, meaning the lenght had to be adjusted to optimise the signal strength. also HF type radios use a directional antenna to bounce their signal off the ionisphere (Spellcheck) to gain increadable distances. this is related to the length (compared to Freq) and angle of the antenna.
