Is It A Front Drive Shaft Problem? 06' SR5

Postby JOEKA on Thu, 17 Apr 2014 8:17 +0000

Hey, I'm new to the Hilux scene, grown up with Commodores and Corollas, so 4x4s are a new ball game to me, lol.

I've got a problem with my 06' SR5, its manual and has a 50mm lift at the front...

When driving normally, its got this rough thudder from the front left that sounds as if it only happens like every 4th rotation of the tyre. bit of a whoop whoop sound.

Thinking it might of been the front wheel bearing, I changed it and the front hub too, what a job that was, lol.
But yes, the sound is still there.

I was also told, to check if you need new driveshafts, you full lock it to the left and right and listen for clicking sounds, I can't hear any clicking. Does this mean its a little more serious than the driveshaft?

Any info would be greatly appreciated,

I've searched, and searched, and haven't really found anything that is spot on to my issue.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I experienced the same thing last year.

Replaced both front wheel bearings and the sound was still there.

Couldnt pin poin it as it sounded clearly like it was coming from the front end but couldnt find anything wrong.

Was concerened it might have been the front diff centre.

I found out no less than 2 to 3 weeks later when the rear wheel bearing let go.

After replacing the rear wheel bearings the sound went away.

Point is, the wheel bearing hum/thud sound was being transffered through the vehicle making it sound like it was coming from the front.

Id suggest getting your rear wheel bearings checked before they sht themselves in an oily mess everywhere.

You wouldn't have a tool to press out rear wheel bearings would you?

Abs units are a bit more expensive as you have to also change the abs sensor ring and it is held on by another collar. See if I can find a pic

X2 my failing rear wheel bearings sounded for all money like it was a front left issue.

I've got the new rear wheel bearings, now all I've got to do is find somebody with the tool needed to press the old bearings off, and the new bearings on.

Any ideas? I don't want to take the axles somewhere, only to discover they used an angle grinder to break the oldies off.

Melbourne area. preferably west.

Suggestions? Recommendations?
