Love to know what the good reason is Dave.
My unsubstantiated theory is that it is simply another facet of the no fuss, no thought, fixed/cut price servicing, long warranty, treat your car as kitchen appliance not a machine, don't think about it, don't care about it, turn it over regularly syndrome. And we will help you along by not giving a fat rat's what we do or don't do when it arrives at our revered door for attention.
The sad part about all this crap service is that the info which is available to Toyota techs is mind boggling. If the tech is switched on and enjoys the challenge, truly good stuff can be done. B/Hs apparent attitude, and what he shares with us is an excellent example. I had a mate who worked for a different brand who was similarly motivated, and what we learnt from him was wonderful.
Sadly, these people and this enthusiasm are not the norm, as Roo has pointed out.
