2022 HiLux Rogue engine oil selection

Postby HiluxRogue on Fri, 24 Jun 2022 9:41 +0000

Hi guys,

Hello to you all. First ever post here. Been searching on the internet and unable to get a solid answer.

I recently took delivery of a 2022 Hilux Rogue 2.8 Diesel.

its done 4000kms right now. Had a trip to QLD and back to Sydney and have found dipstick indicates the engine oil level is down a bit. I want to top up because the need to travel to QLD again next week.

Looked at the owners manual where it says the preferred oil is 0w-20 ACEA C5(pre filled at the factory) or 0w-30 ACEA C2(if driving at high speed and under heavy load).

Went to the Toyota parts today, their 0w-20 C5 is by GR racing and made for Supra (website says this oil is also suitable for facelifted Hilux, Prado and Foretuner post 2021.

The salesman said 0w-30 is the go to oil.

I am confused. Which one should I get? anyone owns a post 2021 Hilux faced the same issue?

In my 2017 hilux I ran 5w-40 oil in it for over 4 years with no problems. 0w-30 is only specified to save fuel, not increase the longevity of the motor. In hot Aussie summers & if working the car hard (towing, etc) 30w oil is to light. Check the handbook, I think from memory it states a heavier oil can be used in hot conditions.
I now have a 2022 hilux & will be continuing to use 5w-40.

Yeah, good pick up Dave, was it low because they didn't fill it correctly? Or maybe, is there a leak? Under warranty your first stop should be Toyota dealership you've been dealing with.

Sorry guys, just to clarify, there is no oil leak, but rather oil burning. After 1900kms return trip to QLD the engine has lost a bit of oil as the dipstick suggested, Hence the beed for top up.

I checked the oil level before the trip, it was full. After the trip to QLD I checked the dipstick again and it has lost about 1/20 of engine oil. I checked the oil sump there is no leak. So I think its oil burning?

It wouldn't be happy with a new engine burning that much oil
I use f..... all oil at any time and I have a heavy foot.

Yeah, something not adding up. The only reasonable explanation that comes to mind is if an oil change was done recently before the trip and oil was only added to the block and that might not have included the filter or something like that???
That is the "pre-trip" reading was taken after the oil change and before the engine was run.

Yes, run a heavier oil.
I might be wrong.

All new engines use some oil, until the rings bed in... I would use heavier oil in Australia as temps are higher than elsewhere. As said before, Toyota recommend 0w30 as the salesman suggests and go to 5w40 in hot weather. I use 15w50 penrite in a gen7 without any issues. 78k up and still doesn't use any oil.

And yes Toyota use lighter grade oil to get better fuel economy, no real other reason ever been given. What does your handbook say about oil selection? Probably something like 15w40 in warmer climate, check the temp range vs oil viscosity.

For context: the 150kW 1GD engines have a history of hot oil problems. Toyota updated the ecu software but most people changed from the recommended 0W-20 engine oil to 5W-30 oil.

The problems are being seen in the Landcruiser 300 F33A-FTV engine.

All the more reason to use higher viscosity oil.

Yep. Most of southern Aus will be ok with 0W-20 but when you combine that with towing and hot temperatures, it ain't so good at least for the stock ecu programming and a bit of oil consumption.

Its all about emissions... I personally cant wait for an EV ute with 1000kms of range so we dont have to worry about problems with piston engines etc etc any longer.
I might be wrong.

That's worth waiting for but it won't come cheap.

As to oil selection... Heavier oil would solve the overheating problem as not many realise oil is part of the cooling system and higher viscosity transfers more heat. ;)

Stick with Toyota oil, that way they can't blame you for using third party brands if you have an engine failure.

All well and good but even Toyota dealerships use other brands of oil, Toyota oil is not made by or for Toyota but dealers use whatever they can get cheaper and put their 'genuine' sticker on the windscreen. My regular services in a dealership used Valvoline in my aurion and corolla and hilux because I watched them putting it in and then I asked
As long as you stick to the viscosity and oil types in your handbook I would not believe there would be a warranty issue... Especially if your getting the hilux serviced as required.

I suspected as much. And I also suspect most mechanical workshops are doing the same - buying, bulk, cheap crap.

In reference to 'which oil should I use'? If in doubt ring the manufacturer. The companies I use have a ph number for technical enquiries. My personal favourite oil is Anglomoil. It's a relatively small Aus company making excellent quality lubricants and nicely priced too. I've rung up their tech support many times and received what I assume is very good advice.

As the old castrol ad said... 'oils ain't oils' so best choice is an Aussie based company like penrite
Just get a quality oil preferably semi or full synthetic and the right viscosity and you should be OK. ;)
I don't mean they use 'cheap crap' as Valvoline is a good product, I'm just saying that Toyota don't use Toyota branded oils exclusively. The Valvoline used in my petrol cars is Engine Armor and penrite inThe diesel.
