Depress Clutch to start

Postby yesman on Sun, 22 Jul 2018 5:44 +0000

Have a new 2018 sr dual cab. I'm annoyed by the engine start routine which requires the clutch to be pressed down before engine turns over. Have checked manual to see if that can be bypassed but cant seem to find anything. So, is it possible to start engine without pressing the clutch...right down?

Nope - blame the nanny state for that one. Been driving for almost 50 years and never started a car in gear in that time but big brother knows best apparently.

Mine says Depress Brake to start (it's an auto).

So every time I get in, I say: you're just a bloody hopeless brake, you're no good, you'll never be any good...

Makes me feel like a right bastard.

Reverse stall recovery requires the clutch to be engaged in reverse when turning the key so that can't be done with these new laws.

Pretty sure someone covered this already if you have a search but it would be pretty easy to find the clutch switch and bypass it so you can start in gear

There was a related link a while ago (https://www.newhilux.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=118&t=27786&p=402545&hilit=clutch+cruise#p402545 ).

You'd need to check that disabling the clutch position switch didn't have side effects when using cruise control. Normally pressing the clutch disables CC for gear changes - you'd need to keep that in mind.

I would think they would be two separate switches, or two sets of contacts in the one unit, cruise control has do disengage at the beginning of the action and the start sw at the end of travel.

As far as laws go, there isn't one that I am aware of to ensure the clutch pedal is depressed for starting but be a pretty sure bet there is one for bypassing a safety device.

I have been asked to install a button on the dash (that has to be pushed at the same time as the key) a few times over the years because small children have turned the key of parked vehicles.

Thanks for that - I didn't think that was a law for the feature but there certainly are laws for bypassing a safety device.
