Tray plans

Postby 2012sr5 on Fri, 05 Jun 2015 2:11 +0000

Hey guys looking to get rid of my tub and canopy for a steel tray. Plan is to build one myself. Does anybody have any plans/drawings for a tray they are willing to share?
Thank you

Most guys kinda make it up as they go. 1500mm is a good width for it. For a dual cab if you want a short tray go 1500mm long which will sit about flush with the tow ball or 1800 will be a bit over. If you have a extra cab go 2100. I made mine that length and I recon it was perfect size.

I've made a few now. The one thing I'd recommend would be to not go too heavy in the wall thickness of the steel or you will be too close to gvm to actually "legally" carry anything.

I'm about to build an aluminium tray for my Hilux, nothing like the shitty bolt together aluminium trays you see getting around though. All welded, most likely headboard fuel tank, etc...

Have a look at my build thread, I just made mine, I won't be home for a few weeks but when I get back I can post my 'plans' For you, I went 1600 long by 1750 wide and used 75x50x2mm rhs for my outside and headboards, 25mm square rhs for my cross bars and 75x75x3mm rhs for my chassis bearers attached to the mounting points with 8mmx50mm plate welded into L brackets with a gusset on one side. I used 3mm ally checkerplate for the floor, mudguards and roof

I went through your build thread this morning before I posted. Your tray has come up good. Plan was to use 75x50 around the outside just was not sure what to use in the middle and how heavy to go.

You can always get a headboard mandrel bent up at most good engineering shops too, if you like the look of tube. It sure takes a fair bit of time out of the process.

It'd sure make things a little easier. Is there a standard hight to make the brackets off the chassis mounts?

I made mine 100mm long by 50mm in an L, if I did it again I'd go 150mm long so I had a bit more bracket to weld to my runners
As for setting up my tray hight I measured from the bus stop to spring then added that to the top of my tire to get my min height, I then added 50mm for clearance
